Hi Folks, I went out with Canon G10.
I left the Digital Zoom on in case it needed it.
Nearly all the shots were severely cropped.
ie. The finder did not match the actual shot area.
Got a few animal pics not too bad.
Anyone noticed this, or have I ticked
another Wrong Menu Box???
Lets face it there are far too many items in the menu,
This is indicated by a 300 page manual HAD to print out.
With a poor memory this is hell !!
Bye folks.

Most viewfinders show less than the sensor records, but it sounds like you have a more severe problem.

As for the manual, you can probably download a pdf version from Canon. Then you can press Ctrl-F to find various topics. It's a lot faster than paging through the paper version.

ROT (rule of thumb)

Can't help with the complexity of the camera. Perhaps that's why I am doing quite well selling film cameras on eBay. Prices are up. Some people are absolutely fed up with digital. I bought a ton of film equipment when people were giving it away a few years ago, and have been picking up camera's from people who are not watching film camera trends, since that time. Anyone watching Craigslist and eBay are not finding the bargains they were just a few years ago on high end film camera's. Example, my purchase of a $35 garage sale camera (SLR just the body) sold on eBay for $196 about 6 months ago.

Oh, and btw, I can still kick Digitals Butt for the most part with film... Medium and Large format.

My own personal ROT... Film for Image Quality, Digital for immediacy. (I can close that gap with about $6000 to $10,000 dollars worth of digital and computer equipment)

Now back to the ROT pertaining to your digital zoom/crop scenario....

Digital Zoom is, in fact, a cropping tool built into the camera. Crop to the Zoom factor and then create the Zoom portion at the megapixel rating the camera is set to perform.

Common ROT on this for most people... Re Digital Zoom, Turn it off, Leave it off. The only two zooms that work are Optical Zoom and "Sneaker Zoom". Personally, I use Adida's hiking boots.

I agree, turn off digital zoom! All it does is crop the image beyond optical zoom, you can do that much better on your computer if you want to knowing that you have a full resolution image to start with.
