I know there has been a lot of chatter on full frame vs crop cameras. I am thinking about buying the D800 to replace my D90. I have a 28-300 Nikon FX lens but my other go to lens, Sigma 10-20mm and Nikon 85mm macro are both DX lenses. Do you think I will be able to really use (I know they will fit the D800) for all practical purposes or would I be better off upgrading to the best DX Nikon camera(D7100 when it comes out in Sept). I can afford the D800 but to replace the two DX lenses will be a push.

I believe if used on the D800, you'll get an image something close to a D7000 in quality, which is no slouch.
The D7000's IQ is a bit better than the D90 and very close to the D700 (low noise at high ISO's), which I use too.
Where's MT?

Sorry, couldn't resist.
Thats exactly what you get with a DX lens on the D800, is a D7000 image. The two sensors have exactly the same pixel density.
I have never done that myself as I do not buy DX lenses.

I just remembered, I have a 18-105mm DX lens somewhere, came with a D7000 body I bought used and the buyer didn't want to pay for it when I sold that body so I kept it. Maybe I will dig it out and try a couple shots sometime this week, if I can find it.

of course that means you will have to 'change a lens' and therefore contribute to the 'How many...............' thread!

Why would you put regular gas in a Lamborghini?

I believe you get 24 MP with a dx crop in the D800. The D7000 is 16 MP

The D800 in DX mode will give you all the quality those lenses have to offer. DX lenses just give you a smaller part of the D800 sensor.

I'd wait untill the D600 comes out later this year and save $$. I hear that it is going to run about $1600-1800.
If you're looking for mome MP and newer tech, the D400 should also come out at the same time for about the same price... I'm waiting.
