Here is a look at one our highly detailed G Scale model Shay locomotive and second the best side profile I have of the Colorado RR Museum Shay. It isn't the best shot but I think you can clearly see the drive shaft in question is more parallel to the ground than the one in the opening photos in this topic. It might be fair to suggest that the truck under the rear of the locomotive and its tender aren't properly positioned under the tender/loco. Perhaps that is making the drive shaft angle down like that.
As a side note...normal maintenance even on the G Scale model Shay is labor intensive. Lots of lubrication points that require frequent attention. We don't run the Shay very often for just that reason.
