He could swing playing jazz, arrange, play classical piano concertos, compose, and conduct symphony orchestras!! We've lost a musical giant!
One of my favorite albums is his partnering with Shelly Mann and recording his very popular album, "My Fair Lady". I have it on 33 1/3 and CD

Here's some more information about his life:

And here's a taste of his genius:

In jazz, it is my opinion that he was at his best when he was with Ray Brown the bass player. With Brown he could really swing. There is an interesting anecdote about him when he was 16(?) and conducting the LA Philharmonic for the first time. When tuning the orchestra they tried a prank on the kid. The first violinist tuner the orchestra slightly sharp. After they were turned up Previn said "I would everyone to transcribe one quarter sharp.) The kid (Previn) then got a lot of respect for his talent.

A favorite radio program of my youth was "Let's Pretend" which was followed by "Piano Playhouse" which featured young pianists. Andre Previn was one of those then unknown young artists. Yes, he was a great talent , but to my somewhat dismay, renounced JAZZ in his later years. He did retain MY great admiration.

Thanks for posting, Mark, I had not heard this. Oddly, I was listening to the CD of him leading the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in Rachmaninoff Symphony No. 2 night before last...
Incredible musical genius...

I remember those too. What is your reference for him "renouncing jazz". I did know know that.
Thanks for the reply.

Probably my favorite Piano Concerto!! Rachmaninoff wrote the most melodic music. Saw it performed by the NJ Symphony last October. Fabulous!!
The world has lost a most important musician/composer/conductor, ... He ranks among the best, in my opinion.

I had the pleasure of seeing him in person. It is a great loss to the world of music and humanity in general.

Modern music lovers worldwide will mourn his departure. All of us forward our sympathy and regrets to his family and close friends, and especially to his beautiful daughter.
