Me, I prefer single malt Irish! 20yo Bushmills.

I tried scotch one time many years ago. It took a fifth of Jim Beam sour mash bourbon to get the awful taste out of my mouth.

There’s nothing as smooth as a bottle of Irish whiskey, not whisky as the Scots spell it. mmm. Ok, it’s only just past midday here, but where did I put that bottle of Jameson’s single malt?🥃

Since the big brown truck will not deliver camera or computer equipment until the rain starts, I usually race home from work, grab the sodden box, and open it as quickly as possible. Oh, and I always leave a large plastic bag with a note asking if they would please protect the package. Fortunately, I get to use the same unused bag with a new note several times before the Post Office, who understand the concept of happy customers, use it.

I have a post running titled "Nikon Help Needed". This post asked for suggestions on buying a new Nikon camera. With all the help I received I ordered a new camera Sunday morning. I got a call this morning saying it would be delivered tomorrow. It just arrived a day early and I decided that getting a new camera is a special occasion.
I opened the large box and first unpacked the accessories that came with the camera. Next, I took out the camera box and put it on the table. I then opened a bottle of single malt 12 year old scotch, poured myself a glass, sat in the living room and began the opening process; which I am doing as I write this topic. First I want to say thank you to all the people who helped with camera selection comments on my initial post and secondly I wanted to hear if others have an interesting unpacking ritual.

I first charge the battery, load the camera as quickly as possible with that freshly charged battery, load a memory card, go out and shoot the daylights out of it.
OH, failed to mention, I like to put all the stuff except the camera, battery and charger, back in the box and put it away so that when I sell it I have everything in one spot.

Sounds good, but don't drink too much of that Scotch before you start playing with the camera.

Strange, even as a young man the taste of a good Scotch was nice, while Jim Beam made me gag.
To each his own.

I think that the unpacking ritual is pretty damn special, and probably a contributor to GAS! Definitely charger and battery first!

OMG! You didn't make a completely useless Youtube video of the unboxing? You're definitely doing it wrong.

Not sure any unpacking ritual would compare with your 12 year old Scotch method.

Enjoy your new camera in good health!

With the three cameras I've purchased over the last 9 years I've done the same unpacking routine. I will first, per the manual, charge the battery. I'll take only the charger and battery out of the box and charge the battery. While the battery is charging, I'll read the entire manual.

Once one of the batteries is charged, I'll take the camera out of the box and install the battery and attach a lens to the camera. At this point, I'll sit down with the camera, lens, and manual and read through the manual again. Each of the settings and instructions are then carried out with the camera in hand.

Once all of that is completed, it's time to take the camera out and test it. A Macbeth color chart in an evenly lit outside area and numerous exposures to determine exactly how the camera reacts to various exposure settings. Once that's determined, I'm ready to photograph with it.

My guess would be that the glass of Guiness is to kill the taste of the shot of Jamesons.

Two things...As soon as you unpack your lenses, put a clear filter on them to avoid dust on the front lens element. Also, a nice new camera probably deserves an 18-year-old (or older) single malt scotch!
