I have had this problem at times. What I found for me that works is to turn on Lightroom and then plug in the external hard drive and all is well. If I plug in the external drive first sometimes it crashes.

That is nowhere near normal behavior of Lightroom. Something unique to your system is causing you grief.

If you are using the current version, you can initiate an "online chat" where Adobe techs can run your computer remotely and find the issue.

If you are not using the current product, Adobe sponsors a user forum focused on Lightroom. It is frequented by users with deep knowledge, skills and experience. Be prepared with details, screenshots, etc.

I found that if I have my phone or a tablet (both Android OS) I have that problem. I unplug my Android device and start LR with no issues. My external drives were formatted through windows file manager and I have no issues with them.

That's never happened to me, but offering a reason for computer problems would be a big help in solving them. "Unknown Error" doesn't tell us much. I'd call Adobe and see what they say.

There has always been a problem with LR crashing. Usually because something got corrupted. Adobe customer service was able to fix it by taking remote control of the computer and looking around for a cause. Unfortunately not all of the people are good enough to do this, so I have experienced having to go back into the chat and get someone else. I've even disconnected from someone who obviously was lost!
If it is only happening w/LR, I would try Adobe again.

If it is the drives, perhaps you should unplug them all, use LR. If it doesn't crash, plug one of the drives in, use LR. If it doesn't crash, continue with only plugging in one at a time. If LR doesn't crash with any one of them, then plug in two at a time. You did not say how many drives you have plugged in at once, but this process of elimination may point to one of them.

Another thing to consider is whether your computer has enough RAM for LR.

I hope you can fix this, sounds very frustrating. Lightroom crashing could be lack of enough RAM. Lightroom crashing is relatively rare with the proper operating system. I had a problem with freezing which was solved by ditching an old computer with low ram and getting a new one.

While I don’t have an answer for you, I am using a desktop that was originally running Windows 7 and I converted to Windows 10. I have 4 or5 external drives attached and have not had a problem with crashing. I use Lightroom Classic CC. What version of Lightroom are you using?
