I have never used a UV filter, conventional film or digital photography. I ALWAYS use a lens hood.

This is another area of debate, sort of...I use only the hoods on all my lenses, no filter unless necessary (circular polarizer or ND filter e.g.) Filters or hoods will not protect the lens significantly if dropped on a hard surface, but the hood will protect against casual bumps and will also reduce stray light into the lens, increasing contrast and reducing the possibility of flare. If it is a case of the filter vs hood priority goes to the hood especially in sunny outdoor shooting. BUT, you should be able to use both the hood and filter if you want to in most cases...put the hood on first then the filter. If you are using Nikon's or the lens maker's supplied hood this should not be a problem. Third party hoods may present a problem.

Try putting on the lens hood then the filter. This seems odd to me. Are you sure that you have the correct size filter and the correct lens hood?

Have been a professional photographer for over 35 years. Always used a lens hood, never UV filters. Dropped two lenses and the lens hood prevented all damage and even acted as a shock absorber for the lens. Get the proper lens hood for your lens, cheap insurance and hoods do help improve image quality in certain situations.

Digital cameras do not need UV filters.

I think the OP got the wrong size filter, which is why an adapter was needed. It seems from the description that the filter must be larger, which would explain why the hood won't fit!

Nikon produces lens hoods for their lenses. Is the lens a Nikkor? Next question, is the lens hood a bayonet or a screw mount? If it is a bayonet mount, it should not interfere with the screw in filter

Only five ways I can think of that would make it not fit the factory hood. There are probably more, I just can think of them right now.

1 A square filter mount is being used on the lens.
2 The filter is an thin type filter that has almost no threads for a screw-on type hood to grab hold of.
3 The hood is a screw-on type but has no threads where most filters initially.
4 The filter has a step-up ring stuck on it.
5 The filter being used was just plain made oversize or incorrectly.

The OP already explained that she got a filter that was too big for the lens and that she is using it with a step-up ring.
