I have to agree with what others have said about losing the window, bottle and shot glass. The lantern, spurs and gun make a really nice composition by themselves. If you want to include the bottle and glass for more story telling, a different placement might be more effective. This looks like you're off to a really good start, and the image has lots of potential. The quality of the shot is very nice. Keep playing with it and have fun.

Only comment I have is that the bottle with the shot glass is wrong. Its obviously a wine bottle since whiskey (which is poured into shot glasses) was never sold in green bottles. In the era you're trying to portray, whiskey was only sold in clear glass bottles. Buy a bottle of whiskey, drink about half of it, and use the rest for your still life. Being able to see the amber liquid will help balance the color composition with the flame as well.

Great idea about drinking half the bottle, LOL. Thanks for your thoughts---was not aware only clear bottles were used at that time.

Make sure that the casings are the correct ones for the gun.

Just checked; it is a 44cal. Now I must find some shells for it!

I disagree with the people who don't like the window. That lightness in the background is critical. Not sure about the metal corners or whatever they are on the edges of the table. They kind of muddy up the composition.

Yes, the metal pieces actually hold the wooden top of the table together. might try cloning them out in the next still life as the extra element may not be needed. Thanks for your impute.

I like! I also see possibly four good opportunities for great still life pictures-any of the items shown could be great shots.
As an extra comment-I remember when a lantern like that was our only light for chores-like milking cows or any night time doings outside.

Thanks,stepha11, sounds like you were raised on a dairy farm. Times have certainly changes; although our electricity went out last week due to a wind storm; our fireplace and that lantern came in handy.

You guessed almost right. Dairy was the main income but we were a general farm like most of the thirties' farms.
Didn't get electricity until 1944 though this northern MN rural area (Beltrami county-Bemidji area) now has underground service which now never has to worry about wind or electrical storms. Thanks to REA! And great management.
I repeat-Loved the picture.
