Either model will make you a happy camper. The 500 has higher ISO & Faster Burst and is a winner in low light and action captures at 20 MP , while the 750 has a smaller ISO ,slower Burst rate but is Full Frame with 24.3 MP and you'll have to slowly work up to better Glass . It has Full HD video as well and the 500 does not. What you shoot and how you shoot should determine your path. Refurbished factory models are fine acquisitions and will save you $$$$

I personally would always go FULL FRAME if you can afford it. You can always crop to get the tighter & closer filled frame look that we seek and you'll get greater detail as well. And seek lens that are used or refurbished as well to get you started on the Journey.....it's time & money well spent.

I think you meant something else (what it is I don't know) BUT - the D500 has both HD(1080) - and BTW - also UHD(4K) video

I was in the same situation as you and I opted for the D500 which included the base at no additional cost. I'm happy with the D500 but I'm sure you know that the D500 does not have a built in flash

I eliminated all full frame choices as I have a collection of DX lens

With the 850 in play, Nikon cannot sell a (rumored) 760 for north of $2K

The 850 is over $3000 ($3096). They can certainly sell the 760 for $2196 if say they give it something like 30MP. Give it similar AF performance as the 850. Similar frame rate. So for $900 less one only loses the extra MP.

Nope - there is already the 800 and 810 - and the 850 is by now starting to enter the sub$3k market

How large do you intend to print your landscapes and portraits?

I have both cameras BUT like others have said, until you tell me what you like to shoot, I cannot make a recommendation.

I'm surprised you are not keeping the 18-140, it covers the most common range of focal lengths.

There is little advantage to a FX over a DX. It is mostly low light performance.
The advantage of DX is lighter, smaller, less expensive, larger selection of lenses, greater reach and for wide angle, can use wide angle lenses that are not compatible with FX.

Keep in mind, if you consider using the D750 in "DX mode" unless there is some magic I don't know of, you will be cutting out more than 1/2 of the pixels; 1/(1.5*1.5) = 0.44.

Neither landscape nor portrait photography is usually done in lowlight.

It seems for your use the D500 is the better choice.

Sorry, D500 is available refurbished for $1350.

Where do you see the D500 refurbished for $1350.00? What I'm seeing on Nikon Refurbished website is $1699.96 refurbished.

????? Next to the D5, the D500 and D7500 are Nikon's best low light cameras.

I bought a D750 in January of this year, and so far, I am loving it. I still have and use my D7100, and I still love it as well :-). The D750 is very similar with the controls. It could be a placebo effect, but I think it does have somewhat better image quality, based on some early morning duck/geese shots at my local pond and a recent indoor dance contest, than I've historically had with my D7100 using a FF 70-300mm F/5.6 . I originally bought it refurbished through Adorama for $1,150.00, but the display quit working during a shelter pet shoot during the 2nd week I had it, and I had to return it. Nikon then dropped the price, and I picked it up new one for $1,296.00. So far, the new one has been flawless. I've been very happy with my d7100, and so far so good with the D750.
