I carry 2 lenses for street and most everything else. Nikon 24-120 and 70-300 zoom. This gives me a choice of including more of the scene, or being more anonymous and shooting from where subjects wont notice me. Both lenses are very sharp. I sometimes bring a 10.5mm fisheye for interesting architecture shots.

What lens do you suggest using in order to avoid confrontation from subjects being photographed. 50mm? 28-135mm? 70-200mm?

Throw-on a photo vest and no one will object to being the subject of street photography: in fact, they will probably become willing photography subjects.

D7200 with 18-140, dialed in at 18mm (FF27). The massive DoF solves some focus challenges. You want to be fast, so set the focus point at hyperfocal distance, note the near limit, and now you have a (huge) point-and-shoot. Either switch to manual and leave it alone, or use BBF and don't refocus. The quickness drastically reduces negative reactions; usually they aren't even sure you took the shot. It would be better to have an 18mm prime, because camera size is just as important as lens focal length; you want small. Agree with sometimes focusing a bit away from them so they aren't confident they were shot. The second card slot on the D7200 allows surrendering a small capacity and empty SD card on demand, if needed. Also, don't dress and act like a pro; act like a tourist! I heart New York sweatshirts are the thing!

That's one approach to street photography. But most of
the great street photographers have worked on a candid
basis. Would you say that Henri Cartier Bresson or Garry
Winogrand are dishonest or afraid? When you ask permission
you lose some spontaneity. If all street photographers felt
they had to ask permission we would be missing a lot of the
greatest street photography in the history of photography.

Looking at the "spontaneous" candids and also looking
at the shots of cooperative subjects or subjects aware
of the photographer, and comparing them, I disagree.

Bresson's work is mostly cold and boring, but it does
show the ability of the newly introduced small format
to help a photographer work unnoticed. A very good
breakthru for journalism. No breakthru for aesthetics.
Also good for family snaps ... less posing by subjects.

Yeah .... they're not likely to object to being
photographed while they're laughing at you !

No one would ever suspect that she might be taking pictures. She just blends into the street scene.

Let's be fair. Indiana's post IN NO WAY claimed
that such a vest was stealthy. On the contrary,
he said that it would attract willing subjects for
your street stuff.

The photo vest picture was posted only to show
just how silly a user would look doing street in
such sartorial splendor. Their is no claim that it
will let the wearer blend in to the street scene.

FWIW, this is not just speculation. I have made
Real World observation of a typical photo vest
operator. It was not a mere passing glance cuz
I found him so amusing that I hung back far a
while just to watch the show. But no passers by
volunteered as subjects. Given the loonies that
frequent our downtown on Sunday mornings,
everyone just ignored him. He wore a big SLR
and a Crocodile Dundee hat and kinda prowled
around and kept peering into the eyepiece. It
was like you called up Central Casting to order
a Photo Wacko and they sent you this guy !

I recently added a Lumix G-85 to my toolkit and even more recently decided to get the Olympus 14-150 as my walk around lens. When I was ordering I noticed that Adorama had a “kit”, the 14-150 plus their 17mm 1.8 along with cases and hoods for only $200 more. It just showed up yesterday and I’m even more excited about 17mm, what a nice little lens. I’m thinking that setup will replace my D7200 with the 35mm 2.0 as my go to street camera

My street gear is either a X-T2 with a 23/2.0 or a F100 with a 35/2.0. In either case, I ditch the grip. Occasionally, I use the original Lensbaby on a D500. The lensbaby does get attention though.
