I doubt that any of my grandparents ever even held a camera. My Dad took pictures. He used a Kodak Brownie. his good camera was a Graphlex that was owned by Roudolph Valentino. I now have a small collection of still and movie cameras.

My mother just died a few months ago, and I'm now the keeper of all the family photos accumulated since back in the 30's and 40's. Soon I'll start scanning them into a digital format.

That task will keep me busy for a long time. But if I don't do it, nobody else will.

As you scan, make sure you also note who is in the photographs, where/when they were taken, etc. (If you know that information, of course).
I have quite a few photos dating back as far as 1890s, and am in the process of scanning them. I can just see my four boys when I'm no longer there: Don't know who that is, garbage! Next! Who? Garbage! Next.

Careful with the 3 garbage cans. What you think is worthless today may become something you'd give anything to have back a year from now. If they were taken with a Nikon, he spent the big bucks to have an excellent camera, and he spent hard earned money to process that many slides. I suspect many were important to him but you aren't seeing it at the moment. You may be casting out his fond memories and may regret it if you move too fast. We're not talking about worthless used clothing from the 1950s sent to the Goodwill - you're permanently eliminating memories captured in somebody's life and there were reasons those memories were captured - possibly for your parents and you instead of for him.

A Kodak Duoflex II. Note the black sandpaper strip to the left of the bottom lens. It was used to rough up the contact of the flashbulb !

I used to see pros stick the contact end of the bulb in their mouths before putting it into the flash gun. They didn't use lead in those contacts, did they? Naw!

My grandfather was into photography and had several cameras. Two of which I own now. He had a Kodak Duoflex II, which I remember him using a lot. He also had a No. 1 Pocket Kodak and a Mercury Univex. Years after he passed away, my mom gave me his cameras and film strips and photos from the 30s and 40s. I recently bought an Epson photo scanner to scan the film and I am just starting that process now. I love looking at old photos.

This 1910 No.1A Folding Pocket Kodak is the camera my grandfather took pictures with. He passed it down to my dad some time in the late 30's. My dad passed it down to me when I went to visit him for Fathers Day this year. If any of my kids or grandkids show any interest in photography I will pass it down to them one day.

My sister was the keeper of the family photos and she had them in the trunk of her car when the car was stollen. Good Bye :(
