Need help with Lightroom

I just returned from a family wedding in Puerto Rico where I took quite a few pictures that I promised to share. Somehow, my usual process is producing unbelievably small files - too small to be of real use. I'm pretty sure I am missing something but despite Googling and looking at Help sections, I can't figure it out. I take photos with my D-850 and input them to Lightroom (worked for years with my D-800). I use RAW, so the file size should be huge. I do light processing and export them to a photo album on my hard drive. I usually then select a number of the photos to share on Shutterfly or by E-mail. Somehow, the original huge file by the time it gets to Shutterfly is about 100 kb, yes, that is right, kilobits! When I was using my D-800, I would get huge files that were sometimes too large to share by some E-mails. I expect there is a step I'm missing or I have some wrong settings in Lightroom. I have Googled the best I could but the articles on resizing files in Lightroom only managed to increase the file size from say 100 to 120 kb. I hope someone can help. I'm not particularly facile with Lightroom yet, so I will need pretty detailed suggestions.

Thanking you in advance,

Scotty

Look at an unexpected / unintended change in your export parameters. For help on useful LR export parameters, scroll down to the examples section in this post, that includes a screen capture: https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-512745-1.html

What size are your raw files? Raw only, or raw+jpg?

It appears the problem occurs at export. Check all the parameters on the export screen, including image quality, whether Limit File Size is Checked, and whether Resize to Fit is checked.

Bruce,

I use RAW on my XQD card and jpg on the SD card. I use full size. When I look at the size of the file in Lightroom as soon as I import it, it appears to be full size. I obviously have some problem in the export function.

Thank you.

DWU2,

Thank you. In reading the comments so far, it seems I must have some setting wrong in export. I'll try to resolve it there.

I have occasionally scrolled through the export dialog. Sometimes it jumps past a section so be careful just how you scroll and watch out that you don't miss something. I find that moving the scroll bar manually is better than just pushing page up or down.

The "File Settings" section of the export dialog has a checkbox next to a file size limitation. That will try to force the file size to something specific, probably dropping the image quality (increasing the jpg compression) in the process. Just make sure that checkbox is unchecked.

Dirt Farmer,

Thank you. I'll check that. It has to be there somewhere.

To all that responded, thank you sincerely. I am so impressed with the responsiveness of UHH. I did review the export settings and found that, as was expected based upon the responses, my settings were for very small export files best suited for cell phones I'm guessing. I finally found the export file for File Settings and Image Sizing and changed the quality to 100% (it had been at about 70) and the Resize to fit to "Long Edge" at 2048 pixels. That improved my 80kb export to 2.4 mb which I think will be considerably more usable.

Thank you again.
