While visiting my son while he was on assignment, I was lucky when I met a couple in his village in Germany that befriended me. They took me to the Alsace region in SW France, just a few hours from Niedermohr, where my son lived in SE Germany for 4 years. These are from Colmar, a beautiful town of mostly half timbered buildings some dating dating back almost 800 years. There is a huge "Statue of Liberty" in the roundabout entering the city - homage to Bartholdi, a native who designed our Lady Liberty. I loved the whole region and know how fortunate I was to be able to stay for 6 weeks with my family and have this wonderful couple as my personal guides.
