I really want a lens that I can take right out of the box and go birding right away. It would mainly be my backup camera. My main camera is my Nikon p1000. I really thought I wanted the sigma 150-600mm. Now I’m confused
How well do you do birding with the P1000?

I really like the Nikon 200-500mm. If you have the opportunity in your area to rent a lens, you could compare the Nikon, Sigma, and Tamron lenses to see which one you prefer before you lay out the money to purchase. You could also purchase used from KEH or B&H Photo.

No specific lens to recommend but heed
a general warning ... Nikon 3XXX bodies
are their least compatible models when
using a lens older than the body, or a
3rd party lens that may be a new model
but happens to have slightly outdated
technology in its design.
IOW, for a 3XXX Nikon, best to use very
current Nikon brand lenses, and whether
you adhere to this advice or not, do buy
from a vendor with a liberal return policy
so you can "proof" your decision.

I'm not familiar with the P-1000. Is it an SLR?

The Nikon P1000 is Nikon's super zoom Bridge camera that has a focal range to 3000mm. Its predecessor, the P900, had a focal range to 2000mm. Both are Bridge cameras. The P1000 is priced at $997.
the 3000 serie dslr is low end dslr, I'm say this because the 3000 serie don't have a extra focusing engine build in what does helps for some lenses. I don't know what would be a good lens for this camera. I would go birding with the P1000.....Thom Hogan and Ken rockwell writing about lenses.....

Didn’t say that at all. Your P1000, according to members on this forum, and probably your personal experience, produces acceptable IQ. With an effective reach of 3000mm, what bifs will you be shooting that this lens won’t reach? I just don’t see the need for anything else on your dslr. The P1000 IQ should equal just about any lens you put on the D3400. Good luck in choosing.
The D3400 has the Multi-CAM 1000 autofocus sensor module. It doesn't have any autofocus points rated in the f/5.6-f/8 range. The Sigma 150-600mm is an f/5-6.3 lens. You might have some focusing issues in low light at the long end.
I would stick the the Nikon 200-500mm f/5.6 AF-S or Nikon 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 AF-S lens. I have the 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 lens. It's sharp and has very fast autofocus.
i just wanted a back up to my nikon p1000. i have the nikon d3400 body with a sigma 50-500mm. i was hoping for a different lens hence recommendations

The Sigma 50-500mm is an f/4.5-6.3 lens. Have you had any focusing problems at 500mm? I would rent the Nikon 200-500mm f/5.6 to see how it works for you. LensRentals.com is excellent.

And you said the D3400 is the back up. Buying the 200-500mm is going to cost you more than another P1000. The P1000 isn't perfect (in fact I wouldn't buy one) but what do you look for the D3400 to improve on your P1000?
