Depends on the order of preference assigned to the operators. If a strictly left to right order is used, 12. If X and / are preferred, as in many programming languages, then 18. If anything other, then you figure it out.

3+3=6
6x3=18
18-3=15
15+3=18

The banks would love your kind of math, you deposit $18,000 and your deposit slip reads $12,000, they will love customers like you and they will prove it to you with the math.
That math does not work for me. So 18 is the correct answer, no matter how you work it.

Maybe in Texas, but in the other 49 states, the correct answer is 12!!

There is a defined order of execution for the operations; it is clear and concise. I program in half a dozen computer languages and in all of them, the order of operation is the same. This includes using MS Excel and my TI programmable calculator. It is also common to programs like MathCAD and SMath.Studio. I attached a photo of my calculator earlier.

The answer is clearly 12.

Totally wrong... the first operation is multiplication and is 3X3=9... then you do the addition and subtraction in the order it occurs.

Your banks would give a total of $12,000 because any arithmetic operations would be predicated on the proper mathematical sequence of operations... this is also embedded in COBAL... a programming language I haven't looked at in 40 years.

Sorry you cannot understand the correct answer, Earnest. I'd be happy to provide tutoring in mathematics. I taught it for 38 years.

LOL - I'm having the same "discussion" with my wife and cousin - they are telling me that without parentheses, you have to follow the progression from left to right...

The only thing to do is agree to disagree and enjoy the weekend... Oh - I hear "happy hour" calling

My Dear Aunt Sally - stands for multiply, divide, add, subtract in that order. So, for this problem it's 3X3+3+3-3 = 12.
