Cs6 is the latest. For photo work the main one is Photoshop and video is Premiere. Yes you can get individual programs. Check out this to help you choose.
http://www.adobe.com/products/creativesuite.html. There are other programs other than adobe some very good that are free. It all depends to how deep you want to get into the art.

Considering a subscription. It's $19.99 a month and you'll always have the latest and the greatest.

Free is always good.
Try Picassa or Gimp. There's also a French one who's name now escapes me, that was very good. Have a look around on Google, you'll come up with plenty of choice. It's doubtful you'll find anything as good as CS6 or with any sort of support but, HEY, it's free!
The best, easy to use, program for you is probably the "free" and safe "Picasa" from Google.
All the basics are covered and your images are safe in your picture folder on your PC. i.e. manipulation in Picasa is non-destructive. After you have tried it, if you remove it you do not lose your images.
Artistwally.
Paint Shop Pro x4 is on sale now - I think its $39.99 , , and the learning curve is much less . . . . .

Yes you need to use Adobe CS 6.It is the industry standard.
It has a steep learning curve, but will pay off big time in the long run.
Cheers.

Give Paint.net a try it is a very good program. It is free and will do all you will need, to work on and manipulate your photos.

The best free program is Fastone Viewer which has many features that are associated with photoshop ie adjusting color, reading exif, resizing, cloning, fancy borders, change to black and white, sepia toning and lots more. Just download and play with it. I also use Corel Photo Paint because it comes with Coreldraw which I use anyway and has most of the functionality of any bitmap editing software.
Thanks i will check that out.

I use fast stone, as well - very good at cloning out the ubiquitous telephone wires in New England - for layers, I Use Paint .net (Not the Windows Paint) Both free, and a shallow learning curve. I DON'T recommend Picasa - very disorganized, and takes up a lot of room.
