i just sent a lens to nikon for repair...they received it today...my question is do they send you updates on what is going on with your lens or do you one day receive it back in the mail?

You will get updates if its a paid repair. If its a warranty repair it will usually just be fixed and shipped. Any delays will have notices sent.
You also got a repair number. You can go on their website and see exactly where the lens is in the repair process.

MY experience is they send you an estimate and if you OK the estimate they repair and return.
I had one situation where they gave me an estimate and I Accepted. A few days later I received the camera back with a note that the camera was not repairable. There was no charge.
Hopefully their will be no charge since the lens is under warranty - less than a year old...it is an 18-300 nikkor zoom....it has lens creep...it wont hold at the mid ranges....so should be covered...
