One of my favorite places! Nice and sharp capture of the wonderful texture of the place. Given the poor overall lighting, the water reflection is a very nice extra.

Hi Mike, thanks for viewing. I can understand why its one of your favorite spots. I'm sure there are many favorite spots in Utah. It's an especially beautiful state. I'm definitely going back for more visits. We really enjoyed the hiking into and out of the canyons in the NP. We went out at sunset, but 'no joy'. It was completely overcast with light rain. Hopefully the next trip will have better lighting.

The water reflections required me to bracket my shots. The water in my first image was totally blown out. Looked like two big white blotches in the image. So I bracketed the image and blended the river back in.

A little subtle selective dodging and burning back and forth would prevent the forward cliff from blending into the far one. Just a little more separation is very effective. Im afraid I didn't save the work I did on it, so this is unedited and just to point out the area in the center of the photo. Very nice photo.

Thanks Fergmark. I really appreciate your feedback. This is what I'm looking for. I agree that a little more D&B can add more separation and depth as you suggested. When I have a great experience, I tend to remember the good things in the image and can easily be blinded to the defects. Feedback from others that aren't emotionally attached to the image can point out those defects (opportunities to strengthen) in the image.

Thanks for taking the time to help.

I really like the expansive look to this image. I tried one when I was there, but there were people in the way. One question: If you had stepped to one side of the other, would you have gotten the entire horseshoe of the river in your frame? Your colours are really nice. It was cloudy when I was there also, and my colours weren't so nice.

Hi Kathy, thanks for viewing. I agree with the expansive view. Unlike the Grand Canyon, where my first reaction is "WHOAAA", at Dead Horse Pt, your closer and more intimate with the canyon. We didn't have any problem with people because we were off-trail on a rocky point away from the main visitor locations. Where we were, there wasn't a soul around except for the birds. No hikers, no voices, no car noises. It was just dead quiet, except for us.

I don't believe, in the State Park, there is a location on the rim where you can see the entire river bend. You can make the drive to the bottom and see the entire bend, but up close. You can see that dirt access road in my image. There is a point in Canyonlands where you may be able to see the entire bend, but that location is further away. We were about a mile west of the main overlook that you see in most pics. Even going further west still doesn't get you an unobstructed view of the river bend.

We got there for sunrise, but it was overcast and drizzling. The colors were flat with no sunrise light. But later in the morning, we got a few breaks in the clouds which let a little spotty sunlight thru. But it only lasted about an hour or so before the drizzly rain started again. We got lucky since mother nature doesn't always cooperate.

it's a great shot just as it is. For fun I would try cropping a bit off of the bottom just to enhance the panoramic feel.

Good idea Rineal. I've tried different crops, but tended away from more panoramic. I'll give it a try and see how it works. Thanks for your feedback.

Thanks John for viewing. I'm going to spend more time doing a little more D&B.

Thanks for visiting and commenting.

BTW, I remember your images of moored boats. The image of the tugs brought back memories of my service days. We occasionally used tugs almost identical to those in your images as diving platforms. Nice images of the boats.

It is a great and beautiful shot. I would not change anything.

Hi camerapapi,

Thanks for visiting and viewing. Utah is just a gorgeous place to visit. It not hard to get beautiful shots there. I just need to take advantage of the opportunities by learning to point the camera in the right direction, wait for the right light and get better at fiddling with the camera dials. LOL

As others have posted, just an amazing landscape! I took the liberty of reducing some of the highlights in the sky upper left - I created another background layer, and used the PS clone stamp tool to add some clouds at a very low (15%) opacity. It's a little trick I learned here on the Hog, so hope you like it!

We spent the last Thanksgiving holiday at Canyonlands in Utah. It was raining on and off on Thanksgiving day, so we spent the day in Dead Horse Point rather than hiking into the canyons. We stopped and had lunch at an off-trail point between the Meander and Shafer Canyon overlooks. While sitting at the end of the point enjoying the view, the rain stopped and small breaks in the clouds let a little sunlight thru. This image is the view we were enjoying.

I'm asking for any constructive feedback/suggestions to improve this image. Also, please feel free to download, edit and repost this image with any recommended changes to illustrate your feedback.

I like the original, but find your edit increases my level of interest, Tommy! It is amazing how sometimes, subtle changes have strong effects.
