Canon speed lite 430exii question!

I have a canon 430ex ii on my canon 60d. My question is: when it is in ETTL mode should the zoom -- mm on the screen show what my lens is set on. If its at 24 should it say zoom 24mm, or if it's at 70 zoom 70mm?
Mine is not changing it just stays on zoom--mm?
I thought in ETTL it automatically detects your lens mm?
Thanks for anyone who can help!

Make sure the flash is in ettl mode , sounds like you have the flash set to manual zoom or even Slave mode . I dont have the manual in front of me right now, but yes it should auto zoom .

Doesn't sound right to me. I have the 430EX flash. However, it's not the E-TTL mode that controls the zoom. It's the ZOOM button on the top right of the back panel. If you press the ZOOM button and then press the + or - semi-circular buttons, it will let you manually control the zoom angle so that you can use a narrow angle light beam in a wide-angle shot. But, I've never see an "xx" mm zoom angle.

Thanks. So it should actually be showing me the numbers and changing as I zoom in and out.? It is definitely in ETTL. And I don't have it on manual and the slave mode would be showing if it were on so I believe
I've it set correctly. Do I have to set anything in my camera?

Okay, I think I found the problem. The focal length is displayed only when the flash head is pointing forward. If you are using it in a bounce-flash setting, it will show --mm.

One other subtle thing can cause the same thing to happen - pulling out the built-in diffuser, even just a little bit.

Are we assuming that you use Canon lenses?

No. The behavior is the same when I use my Sigma lens.
