Tokina AT-X AF 100mm 2.8 macro lens question.
Love the lens, wondering what the limit-full button does.
Thanks.
It probably has something to do with the focusing range. In 'full' it searches the entire focusing range from macro range all the way to infinity. In 'limit' it searches either from an 'intermediate' distance to infinity, or from macro range to an intermediate distance. I have no idea what range 'intermediate' would be. The lens would 'adjust' the focusing range to focus more quickly, since you've 'told' the lens that you're only making photos in the limited subject distance range.
This is strictly a WAG.
Good luck with your new lens.
Here's a copy & paste from a Google search for the phrase "Tokina AT-X AF 100mm 2.8 macro lens instructions:"
"A focus range limiter switch on the side of the lens locks the lens focus into or out of the macro focusing range to avoid excessive AF hunting."
Correct, it is a focus limiting switch.
Rich from Tokina's instruction manual
[100mm F2.8 Macro D]
Limiting the Focus Distance Range
This lens is equipped with a focus-limiting switch, which makes it ideal for use
as a moderate telephoto or portrait lens. Lock the lens out of the macro range
to shorten the focusing time by setting this switch to the LIMIT position instead
of the FULL position.
FULL: The lens will focus from 0.3m to infinity.
LIMIT: The lens will focus from approximately 0.38m to infinity OR from approximately 0.3m to 0.36m in the macro range.

Tokina lenses are proof that high quality, fast lenses do not have to cost a fortune.
I wish it was available in a Pentax mount.

I own this and love it. The limit switch works two ways. In macro mode it limit focus range to macro only. In regular made it locks out macro mode focus. Very usefull.
Thank you everyone for the info.
Rich.

With the limit switch at the full position, pull the focus ring in to manual and turn it all the out then flip the switch to limit and turn the focus ring again and you can see that the barrel won't go back in all the way. The switch moves a mechanical lock on the barrel at the position in the picture, so it must be turned off (full position) and turned in or out manually past the mechanical limit.

It is a focus limiter, or time saver as you will, a feature most lenses have. With limiting the focus to a specific area, it takes less time for the lens to find it and lock on. It made more of a difference in the old film days!
