Help or suggestions are appreciated.
For the past several months I have been having some issues with the performance of Lightroom. It will work OK for 15-30 minutes of editing, and then it will significantly slow down.
If I log out and then log back in (not re-boot) the issue is corrected (for about 15-30 min).
When this happens, typically the CPU shows about 40%-50% usage and 50%-60% memory usage.
I am very experienced and knowledgeable with computers and reasonably knowledgeable about Lightroom performance options.
I may be missing some setting, but I have tried all the obvious & typical performance tuning options I am aware of but have not been able to correct this issue. One guess, is that in the past several months Adobe has done some "update" that has a performance bug in it that may impact certain configurations.
Has anyone experienced these symptoms or has some suggestion for me that I missed? It is getting rather annoying to need to log out & in every 30 min.
Some additional information.
Prior to about 4 months ago I did not have this issue. I have not changed any hardware or software.
Does not seem likely it is some malware or virus, because I am well aware of those issues.
I have a high end processor with plenty of RAM (24gb) and two SSDs & a 2TB Hard Drive.
Basic Video card.
2 monitors.
I am running Windows 10
Lightroom Classic CC release 8.1 Build 1200465
Intel i7-3770k 4 core with hyper-threading (~8 way)
CPU is 3.56 GHz overclocked to 4.4 GHz.
Video card-AMD FirePro W4100
Windows 10 is on on a 250GB SSD with 130 GB free space. The LR catalog is on this drive.
Actual Photos are in 1 catalogue pointing to pictures on 2 different drives. (500 GB SSD & 2 TB HD)
The 500GB SSD only has photos. It has 60GB free space and about 400GB of photos
The Hard Drive is a 2 TB 7200 Rpm drive. It has 1.4 Tb free. About 100 GB are photos.
I have about 30gb of cache selected for LR performance.
I have 2 monitors
27 inch 2560 x 1440
21 inch 1920 x 1080
Photoshop does not seem to have these issues.
All of my editing is from pictures on the SSD. The pictures on the HD are part of the catalog, but I am not usually editing any of them. I do not think that having pictures on 2 different physical drives is the issue, because this has been the configuration for over a year.
I know there can be some performance issues with driving higher resolution monitors, but I have been using the same monitors for over a year, so I do not think this is the issue.
I don't know the answer to your problem, but you might try looking at the previews - File > Previews >discard all Smart Previews and discard all 1:1 previews. This will leave you with standard previews. Doing this usually speeds my LR up quite a lot.
I'll give it a shot, thanks

This can happen when you have a lot of local edits on a given file - using the brush, radial and linear gradients a lot will slow things down to a crawl. Increasing your cache to 70 gb may help.

I extend my sympathies - I used to have the same issues. They cleared up when Adobe introduced some performance enhancements to LR. Unfortunately, I'm running the exact version and build number as you are. Where I noticed it was when I was doing extensive keywording. Just a thought - have you tried turning off the graphics processor to see if that changes anything?
the slow response also starts to happen when I am in Library mode, so it is probably not due to edits. I increased the cache & it did not help.
what do you mean by "extensive keywording" ? I do use quite a few keywords. unless I am doing some type of search on them I am not sure why it would slow down other tasks. thanks,

I don't always keyword when I edit - I prefer to get the editing done. Once in a while, I'll sit down and keyword maybe one or two thousand photos.

Crank up the task manager and try to see how many apps are running and who is chomping up all the resources. See what apps are coming up at boot time and see if they are really necessary. Did you install and new apps about the time it started slowing down?

Interesting thread. My LR does not slow down. But after 30 minutes or so it gets “dignity”. When I move the cursor over certain sliders or buttons the LR window changes size smaller and moves in the screen. If I click it, it returns to how it was. Sometime it does this one time and other time it keeps repeating so I close it and re-open. I am running it on a Mac Pro with 32gb and all my files ( cat file and photo files) are on external drives.

Lightroom really needs more ram, not less than 32mg works for stills but 64 mg for video, additionally my issues went away with high end NIVIDIA video cards designed for gaming.
