Camera strap question.

While I haven't had a strap on a camera in 20 years, maybe 25, if I did use a strap, I would use one like the last one I used: LEATHER, with metal ring attachment, soldered shut. I have had straps give up, dumping the camera and lens back in the film days. Watching your five pound-ish camera tumble down a flight of metal edged concrete steps (about 12-15 steps) is a fright, but in that it was a motor driven Nikon F2, it did not need service. The head had come off and the battery packs had flown out of the camera, but a quick reassemble, and a quick couple of motor driven shots of nothing proved Nikon built that thing tough as nails.

Ive been using CarrySpeed for about a month and like it. I find it convenient in that it allows me to keep on the tripod bracket plate while using the strap.

The only system that I know that allows to add a tripod plate is the CarrySpeed CS-Pro system. Watch the second video demonstration.

I really like the Black Rapid product, especially for supporting 2 cameras by your side. Don't worry about the 1/4" mount for heaven's sake, the mount is firmly integrated in a very tough alloy steel case.

I also have the tripod strap by OpTechUSA. It's fine, but you have to modify your tripod center weight hook to latch the connector on the OpTech -- else, it falls off. I had to bend the hook far enough to one side so that the snap latch of the OpTech wouldn't slide off the hook.

Hi,
You need the Black Rapid FastenR-T1 for use with the Manfrotto RC2. I agree that the fixing on the Manfrotto plate looks OK, but it's not designed for this sort of work, so ...
Get the T1 and replace the one on the RC plate. Use the Black Rapid clip to give it that last twist to make sure it's really tight.
The T1 is very expensive for what it is, but what's the value of the gear you're hanging on it?

Thanks Krispix,
This looks like the way for me to go for a solid system to tote a 7D and 24-70 lens

I've used the SunSniper for some time, with no problems. I have the version with the steel wire core, so it cannot be cut by an opportunist thief. I find it very handy, and have had no problems with hanging a 5D2 from the tripod mount. Also use it with a 70-200, using the mount on the lens to hang it from. It is quite quick to remove so you can put it on a tripod, it unscrews.

Yea well, things have moved on in twenty years and the modern synthetics are stronger than leather. It's what they make crane slings out of and holding down straps on lorries.

The "Q-strap" (the chinified edition of the black rapid strap) does what you're looking for. I have my base plates (I purchased an extra) attached directly to my Q-strap and they go on and off the tripod easily and rapidly.

Nope.

As I said in my earlier post, Black Rapid make a special coupling for use with the Manfrotto RC2 quick release system.

I am considering a strap system made by Customslr. It consists of three pieces: the strap itself, a plate that attaches to the camera and allows you to attach your camera to manfretto or Arca-Swiss quick release plates, and a c-loop device that attaches the strap to the camera. All three cost about $150 at adorama. Just curious. Has anyone used this system?

It looks pretty well built.

I, for one, refuse to use a strap that causes my camera to hang from the tripod mount as that is NOT what the manufacturers design them for. My strap of choice is the OpTech products, they are reasonably priced, last forever (over 30 years for mine so far) and made right here in the USA, NOT China! They make the Pro standard as well as the Pro Sling models:

I just purchased the OpTeach Hand Grip and used it a little in the backyard. I like it, it is makes the camera much more stable than hand-holding alone. I prefer to use a monopod when moving around, however, I have found that there are times when a tripod and monopod don't make sense because of moving. The point is, as MT Shooter said, OpTech is high quality and deserves serious consideration.

I recently replaced my neck strap on my Canon with a Bos strap which allows me to use it as a shoulder strap going across my body, releiving the weight on my neck. It allows plenty of quick access to my camera and it attaches to the camera where the original strap was attached. Just search BOS camera straps, made by an engineer in Massachussetts.
This may be an option for you.

Thanks to all for the education on camera straps.
Not suprisingly there are as many opinions as there are UHers.
I decided on the Black Rapid Sport with the R-T1 connector. Amazon $69.95 for strap $ $20 for connector. A lot $ I know, but I am toting big $ in equipment.

I don't think I am the only one that had a 1/4 inch bolt pull lose from a camera. That voids the warranty when attached to only one point when used for carrying a camera. Never again will I attach a camera to a single point. I still use the 1/4 inch tripod mount occasionally but just as a third point for added safety.

I have used this strap and my wife is currently using this strap and likes it. Please see my earlier post in this thread for more information about it.
