In anticipation of the Pres doing something to cut the cost of pharmaceuticals, the companies have raised the prices on many of their drugs.

Yup, one drug went from being free, to costing $350,000 per year!

You just can't make that kind of price hike up!

Yes, but one side can rightfully say this is abusive, runaway capitalism and the other side can rightly say it is the result of one company (by law) being shielded from competition. The way the 350 000 is attainable is that 1) other companies are barred from making it, and 2) insurance companies (by law) have to pay it. So corrupt law (ACA) and corrupt contracts (exclusivity, for several years) screw the common guy.

Government and business are both corrupt.

As a physician I am on the front line on this issue. Medicare part D was written by pharmaceutical lobbiests paying of the GOP who at the time (Bush years) controlled the House and Senate. It forbids Medicare to negotiate prices - it must pay what they charge - no negotiation by law. {Medicaid, the VA and the Military can and do negotiate}. Many drugs were developed by US taxpayers in the form of Federal grants and NIH investigation. When proven they are handed over (free) to pharm companies to market them. Do they give the public a break given that most of the costs of development were by the public. Don't be silly. They say the cost to be charged is the VALUE of the drug to the person requiring the drug. Many cancer drugs in this pathway come at pricing like $10,000 per month for drugs needed to be used each month. Insulin, very basic drug, available for years at $40 per bottle, with no change in the cost of production, now comes at $400-600 per bottle. Insurance companies are your friend until you sign up. Then they fight tooth and nail to with hold payment for needed care. You, the patient, and your doctor spend hours of phone time, paperwork and repeated appeals to get basic treatment paid for. Is this for medical care? Of course not - it is to preserve the seven figure salaries of insurance company executives. Ask your doctor if they think insurance companies are interested in your health or add anything to medical care? It is well documented that pharm companies have raised the pricing on their products in the last 2 years in anticipation of possible controls from the Trump folks - although it is totally unclear how controls will be instituted because they will be interpreted as a violation of corporate freedom.
