Just read Steve Perry's article on cropping, and I'm afraid I'm guilty as charged, and yet I hate to bump birds off their perch by getting TOO close. This bird was fairly unconcerned with me, and I backed off before he flew. He was still sitting there when I left.
You're welcome bluezzzzz. As for cropping ... I read Steve Perry too & both his articles on cropping are good pieces. Truth be known, many photographers, and pros alike crop. I admire Perry and his articles and we learn a lot from him, but even he crops when needed.
I crop when needed on birds of prey - just like you because we don't want to disturb or scare the bird. I don't see anything wrong with it. Some, but not all, of my eagle and bird shots are shot at 500 w/1.4 TC & on DX crop mode. Do I feel guilty? Nope.

I would say she was barely hanging on! Nice shot nonetheless.
