Sigma 800mm Discontinued

Why is this lens discontinued? Poor sales? Is something new on the horizon? I'm tempted due to the price ($6600) vs. the Canon 800 for $13k new. It doesn't have IS, but I'd have it on a tripod and gimbal, so no great loss IMO.

The Sigma site lists a number of vendors. B&H and Adorama say Out of Stock. Does anybody know anything about the other vendors listed (TriState, innocinema, Unique Photo, Focus, Samy's Camera)?

Sammy's in CA? They are reputable.

I've used Unique Camera several times for used lenses and accessories. Haven't bought any new cameras or lenses from them and they are fine to deal with. They have a phone so you can call them with questions.

Most people choose Sigma based on PRICE alone, interesting.

Who really needs an eleven pound lens?

I'll retire to Bedlam!

Why is this lens discontinued? You might contact Sigma and ask 'em.

While Sigma lenses are cheaper than Canon's or Nikon's, I have to say a word in their favor. I'm a stringer for the LA Times and have used a 24-70mm and 70-200mm f/2.8 Sigmas for the past fifteen years with excellent results -- especially the 70-200mm -- and no breakdowns. I paid a third or less of the maker-brand prices and have no regrets, just good pictures.

I can tell you I wish I would have had @ least 800mm lens when I was shooting the last Discovery launch @ Kennedy Space Visitor Center. We were suppose to be at the VIP Launch area, but some Russian Cosmonaut brought an extra guest & we got bumped to a more distant spot.
