Can anyone explain what a plug in is and is Topaz just Photoshop on steroids or does it serve additional needs not found in Photoshop? I have basic PS Elements and there are some limits. Topaz tutorials look amazing but is it a free standing program or does it have to go through PS?

I look at the Topaz tutorials and wonder if the original 'photograph' is still in there....

I see others have pretty well explained Topaz and I noticed you mentioned Elements having some limits. This is true but you can get the "Elements+" (Elements Plus) add-on for $12 and it gives you quite a few more of the Photoshop capabilities that otherwise are missing.

Just to add to your info. On Topaz's website you will see which on their addon's are standalone programs.
Mine are Denoise, Texture, Remask, Impressions and as you have read Studio. Please note that the instructions on their website will help you make sure that your host program will find where the plugins are located after downloading the plugins. I use PaintShop Pro as my host pp program.

I love Topaz, both Studio and the plug ins. Much faster workflow than PSE especially if you create your own presets and tweak them according to the shot. If you save the image from the photobin below the workspace it gives you the option to “save as” and defaults to “edit” . This preserves your original and you have a numbered file - the original - and an edited file next to it in your folder. If you hit “save” in the bottom right corner, you lose your original which is changed to the edited file.

A plug-in for photoshop makes image adjustments a lot easier and faster. It can speed up your workflow.
I always use them vbia a new layer from Photoshop.

"usually" As soon as you make any adjustments to the original file it's gone. (this may be software dependant like Lightroom where the original (raw file, at least) is not changed, for example)

Some Topaz adjustments are available via Topaz Studio

Gone or changed once you SAVE it again. That is why one should usually use SAVE AS and thus create another new file.

You access a plug-in from a host (such as PS, Lightroom, PS Elements). Some of Topaz can be used stand-alone. I use Topaz and Nik Collection with PS Elements and work with layers.

As for your comment, I look at the Topaz tutorials and wonder if the original 'photograph' is still in there...., methinks you're not going to get the full benefit of additional software (although I see you did ask about watercolor effects not long ago) PS Elements is all you need for basic editing and more.

#1 is truly outstanding! Creative, visually interesting, Monet-like in certain respects, well-composed. If this is "fake" then let's have more suspensions of reality!

The other main way to keep the original intact is to do all your adjustments on layers. You can go back and change the adjustments, and they don't change the original.

Those adjustments, regardless of where they are done, show up in the History panel. The History panel is extraordinarily powerful and quite possibly the most useful panel I use in Photoshop.

Apologies if I didn't read the earlier comments close enough, but for 'layers' and the LR users with Topaz plugins, another method is to purchase the Topaz PhotoFXLab. This tool gives you a single interface between Lightroom and all the Topaz plugins. Pass the image from LR as a 16-bit TIFF in colorspace - ProPhoto RGB. Once inside the PhotoFXLab, you can build layers as you step through the Topaz editors, if you use multiple plug ins. For example, I may take an image from LR to Topaz. My first step is to duplicate that layer. Then, I might apply Denoize. I duplicate the results of the Denoise layer and then apply HDR processing in Adjust. I duplicate that layer and then do a B&W conversion. All these duplicate layers are not technically required, but you might compare the results by hiding version layers and see something you want to redo / do differently. You can restart with one of those incremental layers rather than having to cancel out of the FXlab and start over.

I attend free Topaz webinars on a regular basis and thoroughly enjoy seeing what other photographers do with the various Topaz plug-ins and Topaz Studio. FYI, it was mentioned in the last webinar that they are phasing out photoFXlab (not developing any upgrades for it) because they are concentrating on Studio.

All due respect to the last comment, I have found Topaz customer Service to be THE WORST of any program's service I have used. This varies from no response to requests, irrelevant response to the questions or concerns and NO response to complaints about service.

Though it's been several years, same here. I received first response quickly. The email told me to do such and such. I did, and that didn't fix. I told them that. A few days later, I received an email that said, "since we didn't hear from you, we'll assume all is well and we're closing the ticket." I tried to respond + do a new request. Never heard another word from them.

A perfect statement of Topaz customer service. If it isn't in the online FAQ's you're out of luck.
Still, I use a few of their plug-in's, other's are useless.

A photoshop action is a sort of mini program that takes a series of PS actions in a specific order and level. So it's nothing you couldn't do yourself, but it makes a series of actions sell mind numbing and easier.

Some folks are too full of themselves and overprice their stuff.

If you go on FaceBook for Topaz you will receive a fast response from them. I did it and they were fast.
