I am one eighth Scottish and it is totally lost on me. Then I've never been to Scotland either.

No offense taken but just so you know, Americans now have access to the printed word since at least the 1600’s. Do some reading yourself and you might learn about James Fennimore Cooper, Mark Twain, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Edgar Allen Poe and Herman Melville. Come visit. It’s even fairly safe to travel now since the Indians have been contained.

Seriously, why would poetry/literature be lost on your US friends?

Cheers John - I think there will be many Scottish descendants in the US lol!

Yes there are. I am one from the Ogilvie clan. But does one have to be Scottish to enjoy Scottish literature?

Many years ago I was having a drink in a pub in Ullapool. I’d been in Scotland awhile so I thought I had grasped the language. An old gentlemen started talking directly to me in friendly tone. When he was done I realized I had not understood one word he said. Great trip. Still love GB.

I read it twice before it dawned on my puddin head about the reference to poet Robert Burns.

The way to tell the quality of a pun is to measure the time between the delivery of the punch line and the first reaction by the victim. I sat here for almost 10 seconds with my eyeballs spinning in my head. My first words were 'Oh, s..t"

The way to tell the quality of a pun is to measure... (show quote)

From a lot of the replies, the time delay will be measured in days for some people.

Loved the pun even if I didn't understand the language. And I qualify as a member of Clan Donald because of a Great Grandmother whose maiden name was McDonald.

I'm quite surprised by the number of ?'s in these posts .its not that hard or obscure to understand is it ? I laughed out loud but then half of my family tree are Scottish and when I hear the pipes I want to march to them.
