These are all great reviews, exactly what I'm looking for. I believe that the G16 is a very underrated camera for some reason. I have to agree, the image qualilty is great, and the lens is fast. I like the macro feature and find it usefull. If I have a complaint about it, it's the optical viewfinder. It shows no information, and the parallax is problematic, so I tend not to use it. If Canon had seen fit to put in an EVF, it would be the perfect compact camera, as far as I'm concerned. Whenever I consider a compact camera with a 1" sensor, I'm put off by the price and/or the lack of a viewfinder. I'd love to have a G7Xii, but there's no viewfinder, and it only zooms out to 100mm. I find that to be somewhat of a limitation. I guess I've been under-appreciating my G16. I appreciate all the responses.

I agree that the viewfinder poses parallax issues. The lack of information doesn't bother me. Here's a shot with the G15 in the Paris Metro.

By the way, many years ago, Olympus has a superb camera, the UZ-750, which had everything I'd want in a P&S/bridge camera. But it only shot 4 MP; and, it went through AA batteries faster than Sherman did through Georgia.

I bought my G16 by accident. I walked into a Best Buy about 4 years ago. The G16 was an “open box” item on sale for $300. I walked away since I already had a pocketable Canon S100. Who needs another p&s? I returned two days later to take another look. Closer examination of the camera didn’t reveal a single sign that it had ever left the store. Then... I noticed a smudge on the lens. Could it be the reason? I bought the camera and cleaned the lens with 90% alcohol. Since then, it’s my go to walk around and perfect 2nd vacation camera. Solid, reliable, and capable of providing solid, good looking images. My only want is a little longer reach, but that’s usually remedied by a few steps. A year ago, during a Germany schnapps tour, the guide accidentally dripped some on the open lens while the G16 sat in my lap. Some got between the lens cover leafs. I worked for weeks trying to clean them up so the lens could open and close. No luck. I called Canon and presented my problem. Send it in with $200 and all will be well. I’m thinking, now I’ll have a $500 G16. Even though there were plenty of larger sensor camera on the market by then, I sent it in anyway. I really can’t see the day when it will get replaced until it gives up the ghost.

I love mine. My two gripes are that the viewfinder is so small and the exposure compensation knob frequently gets changed accidentally. Mine stays in the console of my car in Alabama and has not suffered.

I've had a G16 for three years or so. When I want to travel without my heavy DSLR equipment, I bring it along. I have brought back some decent pictures from Hawaii, Scotland and England. Some of these I have on my business website. If I'm just driving around town and don't want to lug my equipment, I throw it into the back seat and it's there. I know there are better point and shoot cameras, but I like the choices I have for setting ISO, shutter speed, aperture and other features you don't get on cheaper cameras. I don't see myself getting a different point and shoot in the near future. It works great for me.

My wife has a G16 & I have a G15. We love these cameras for when we are traveling and use them as backups to her Sony Camcorder and my Nikon or Panasonic G9 cameras. They are sturdy and take a very good photos with excellent color. I really like the viewfinder which means you don’t have to fight sun glare on the LCD.

I rue the day when our G15 dies. Wonder what would be a good replacement with the same characteristics.

Bueller? Bueller?

I assume this was a mistaken post? Has nothing to do with the subject matter of the Canon G16.

If you don't mind, I'll ask this question again...does Canon still make the "G" series point & shoot?

Well not really I was responding to this post:"I rue the day when our G15 dies. Wonder what would be a good replacement with the same characteristics." According to that article it kind of sounds like Canon isn't interested in producing new point and shoots.
I looked at many of the newer compact cameras and even called Canon. Canon suggested the G3X - it's pretty pricey $849 with no view finder. If you want a EVF you have to add in something like another $299 to the price. I told Canon that I wished they would make a camera like the G16 with a few more megas and little bit more zoom. The sales rep laughed (LOL) and said she would pass it on. I also called B&H and they suggested G5X $699 with no viewfinder. They also recommended Sony RX 10 lV ($1600).

Nope. The small sensor Gxx and Sxxx series has been replaced by the APS-C and 1" sensor series. G1x, G3x, G5x, G7x, etc.

Occasionally, but rarely until after Christmas, a G16 would turn up on Canon's refurb site. Unfortunately, no longer. I'm surprised the sales people didn't mention the Canon G5x, available as a refurb for $450. It has a 1" sensor and an EVF. Another option at the same refurb price point is the G7x. It's more the size of the old S95/S100/etc series but doesn't have an EVF.

I've tried the G9X Mark II and was very disappointed. IMHO nowhere near the image quality of the G16 and not at all intuitive from a controls standpoint. Shutter seemed sluggish, and low light performance was poor. Also no hot shoe or viewfinder. I keep looking for a suitable replacement, but so far the G16 is tops in my book.
