I been using a Canon G16, now, for a few years and find it to be a pretty good camera. I know a few here on UHH have mentioned they have or had a G16, but I've never really read if they like the camera, hate it, or find it's just ok, or whatever. I'd like to hear from some G16 users and read their likes and dislikes are, and how much they use the camera. The reason I ask is because I've been looking at compact cameras for awhile, but unless I spend a whole lot of money on one, I don't find anything that really compares, aside from the 1" type sensors in some of them.

I love advanced point & shoot cameras, they have all the settings at your fingertips like a DSLR, you just don't have to choose what lens your going to use. I have a ten year old coolpix P7100 that I still use today, their great for street photography. You don't hear much about them today with the mirrorless craze going on.

You didn't ask about the Canon G15 but I suspect it is much like the G16. Love mine. Great image quality, easy to use and built like a tank.

I think the Canon Powershot G16 is a fantastic camera. I have taken 1000's of beautiful photos with this camera. I post a lot closeup photos of flowers to the National Garden Association. I find this camera produces accurate colors. I have entered a few NGA photo contests and done very well competing against professional photographers. A book publishing company recently purchased a few of my photographs. Whenever I receive a compliment, I respond by saying, "don't thank me, thank Canon". Believe it not, I still haven't uncovered it's fullest potential. One more thing, this camera is apparently holding it's value. Amazon is selling a new one for $699 and used ones on ebay are in the price range from $300+ on up. That should tell you something.

Thanks for the great review. I, also, think it takes great photos.

I’ve had a G16 since they were new and love it. I call it my “birthday party” camera. It is, however, much more than that. I paired it with the smallest canon flash and a stofen diffuser and bounce off the ceiling when I can. The results are always great. I recently took a trip to visit my daughter and her family in Oklahoma...the G16 travelled with me, nudging out my much newer Sony a6000, which will not sync the external flash I bought for it. You can’t go wrong with the G16. It takes raw—plus several jpg sizes—allows manual focus and exposure if that’s your thing, has a top dial for exp. compensation, a viewfinder, and communicates with your smart phone to download pictures (which you can then edit on the fly). Overall, a great little bridge camera.

I like the results I usually get from my G16, but I still can't use the RAW facility. It just doesn't open up for me even using DPP4. If it has a fault it is the exposed dial for exposure compensation - all too easy to adjust unintentionally. I would have bought a larger sensor model, but this is good enough not to warrant a change. I found my previous G7 easier to use and have difficulty working around the menu's, but this is something in common with all cameras.

Have had several of the G series cameras as my on the road cameras during my motorcycle travels about the USA. I found I could do a one handed operation with it with gloves on from getting it out of a tank bag, turn it on, aim and shoot, turn it off and get it back in the bag. Plus, when doing normal at a stop picture taking, a view finder for bright sunlight days. A must for me.
One was lost when hitting a bump and lost my grip on the camera and it went bouncing down the road and ended up in a canal. Two more I junked due to scratched lens from bouncing about stuff in my tank bag. Then my present G16 which is still my go to camera about 90% of the time out of the 1/2 dozen I have sitting around here. But I did cut down a lens hood to help protect the front when needing to dump it in my tank bag when the situation requires. So far, after thousands of pictures around 100K miles of life on a bike no scratches.

I have and use a G15, whenever I don't want t carry a large camera, overall very happy, and don't see anything that would make me happier in it's size range, just shot over 300 jpg's of a grandson on stage from the back of the room, all very good, T4i would have been better but didn't feel like carrying it around.

I'm a G16 user. It God it to replace a damaged G9, which was a pretty good P & S but was accidentally damaged beyond repair. The G16 is a reliably excellent P & S. I have hung images in photo exhibits taken with my G16 as often as those taken with my DSLR. The G16 has a higher quality lens than others cameras in its class. It has very good low light and fast action capabilities. Its battery has above average useability time, the eye piece is useful if needed in direct sunlight, the menu layout and controls are clear and easy to navigate, and the size and build quality are great. I've compare images with images taken with the G5X, which has a 1- inch sensor, and find it as good and, at times, better. The zoom isn't a long reach, but does a good job focussing and maintaining sharpness.
I would not be surprised if the G16 gets a reputation as one of the best advanced P&S cameras ever.

Absolutely love my G16 (I actually have 2). It's my go-to travel camera (always in my backpack) and also my primary underwater camera (I use a Fantasea case which provides full control of all camera functions... this is also why I have a back-up body). Provides great images and full manual control. I've tried a number of other "high end" point and shoot cameras and have yet to find anything that compares to the G16. Many of the newer models have moved to touch screen control which I find extremely cumbersome. I'm old school... I like knobs! I've found the G16 to have well laid out controls that are very intuitive. If you shoot with a DSLR (I shoot with a Canon d80), the G16 controls should make perfect sense. I especially like the adjustment dial in the front just below the shutter button which allows for rapid adjustments and it also has a hot shoe which I find is missing on many smaller cameras (critical if you use off-camera flash or do macro work). It's not a DSLR, nor is it a mini point and shoot, but for someone serious about photography, I think it's an amazing bridge camera. (As with most cameras that have a retractible lens, this is definitely a weak point in the design. I had to replace my lens assembly about 2 years ago, but Canon did a great job for under $200)

We got our first G15 in 2013 and it was our main camera for our first trip to Europe. The photos inside Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris were amazing and the preserved memories of that and other trips always remind me how good a camera it is. We’re on our third one now and I am so pissed at Canon for not making a comparable camera for replacing it when it inevitably succumbs to our hard use or whatever, that I swore never another Canon.

Does Canon still make a advanced point & shoot camera?

These are all great reviews, exactly what I'm looking for. I believe that the G16 is a very underrated camera for some reason. I have to agree, the image qualilty is great, and the lens is fast. I like the macro feature and find it usefull. If I have a complaint about it, it's the optical viewfinder. It shows no information, and the parallax is problematic, so I tend not to use it. If Canon had seen fit to put in an EVF, it would be the perfect compact camera, as far as I'm concerned. Whenever I consider a compact camera with a 1" sensor, I'm put off by the price and/or the lack of a viewfinder. I'd love to have a G7Xii, but there's no viewfinder, and it only zooms out to 100mm. I find that to be somewhat of a limitation. I guess I've been under-appreciating my G16. I appreciate all the responses.
