Saving PDF Files

I get daily emails from Adobe, tempting me with their goods. Today, they told me how to do my taxes more efficiently by converting all receipts to PDF files with Acrobat. I've been doing that with my scanner for years. I've saved them as either JPEG or PDF files.

One thing I've found very handy is saving manuals on my computer. I looked just now, and I have 1,572 manuals saved on my computer, taking up no shelf space at all. The important manuals I save in their paper format, but most are now digital.

There is no need to buy Acrobat - Windows has a virtual printer which makes a PDF of any printable document.

I agree about the manuals - although I have a file box to keep the paper ones (where they are supplied), I always try to download the manual for any newly purchased item. Apart from the space saving, they are so much easier to look on line and you can normally search them as well. A two-way gain.

I too scan documents to PDF. My appliance and camera manuals are PDF, but my HTML, CSS, JavaScript, etc. books are still paper books.

I found someone looking for a manual for an obsolete tool on a woodworking forum. Told him to send me his email address in a PM. Copied mine to PDF and emailed it to him. Have a free cup of coffee waiting for me on the West coast if I ever make it there..

What is the advantage of saving receipts in PDF?
This too takes up space on your computer and saving as many as mentioned in here would take up valuable space on one's computer. I agree that searching for the right PDF file is fairly easy, but still time consuming, no?

Speaking of JPG's. Does anyone use a program converter to convert PDF to JPG that is reasonable or better yet....free?

Still curious about saving receipts to PDF, don't understand why?

Dave

If you want to edit or do anything with the PDF you have to buy it.
Can't function without the editing and noting capabilities.

Jerry, the real question is why do you need 1572 manuals?

As an antique tool collector I have 100's of manuals and instructions along with sales literature. Getting it all scanned and cataloged is an ongoing process.
The results are great, easy look up for information and quickly sharing with other collectors.
Adobe Acrobat is a necessity in my field.

A 53-page Vizio TV manual uses 9MB of disk space - peanuts. Receipts take up about 100 - 500 KB. PDF seem to be smaller. My entire Manuals folder uses 9GB, which is insignificant on a 4TB drive. If I have to look up anything about anything I own, I can find it and read it in a few seconds. Using paper, I would have to find the manual and then page through it.

Irfanview can convert from just about anything to just about anything - for free. The picture below shows a JPEG in Irfanview that can be saved as any of the formats shows in the pull-down menu.

IrfanView is a great little program. Too bad it's Windows only.
I've been using it for decades.

As far as manuals are concerned I keep PDFs of many of them but I don't keep receipts that way. I don't keep many receipts and they all go in one pile so I know where they are. To me, they're only useful for about a year so no point in cluttering up my permanent storage with transient stuff.

I've downloaded manuals before, Jerry, but have found it cumbersome to have to scroll all the way down to the page that I'm interested in. Is there a way in PDF to flip to a desired page?

On my Windows machines, Ctrl-F will open a search dialog

You can the search feature to find what you are looking for or you can go to an explicit page number.
