Nice series; thanks for posting. I love steam trains. I used to ride a train with a steam locomotive into Philadelphia when I was in high school. Thanks for the memories!

When I was a kid I use to take the Pennsylvania or Jersey Central shore line from Penn Station down the coast of NJ to see my grandparents in the Long Branch area. I seem to recall that both lines switched to diesel in the early 50's. The steam trains were more fun to ride.

Yes, the Valley R.R. does still operate and doing well. It is next to the original site of Dickinson's Witch Hazel Distillery. The entire area is rich in history, well worth a visit.

The Valley Railroad still operates in Connecticut. More detailed information about
the line is available on the web. I have always appreciated all those who keep
steam railroading alive.

Excellent photos of a time past. My father was an Engineer for the PRR had had the Pittsburgh to Altoona run. Grew up around those steam engines and in the transition to diesel. A couple of winters ago we took the Silverton & Durango RR and it was amazing how the smell of that coal burning engine and the soot/smoke brought back so many clear, vivid memories of my childhood. Guess there are some things you never forget....Thanks for the trip back in time.

If you ever get to Steamtown in Scranton, PA. They have a short run on their line which will bring back
even more memories if you should get to take the trip.

I visited the Steamtown Museum in 2011, but did not have an opportunity to ride the train. Photos here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/8712554@N02/sets/72157627402781267/.
