Democrats could propose some key items like permanent DACA and restored TPS. That would likely get rejected initially as the Coulter/Lumbaugh crowd screams. Which would drag out the shutdown while making it appear that progress was being made.
But there is a bigger issue here, and that is whether Democrats can let Trump use government shutdown as a negotiating tactic. Because if they let him do it once, he will do it again and again. There are a lot of spending bills that can be used for that tactic. Plus the national debt limit. So they must stand firm against it.
I just wish they were a bit better at telling this story. Between these issues:
1) The ~$1.6 billion in border security funds that haven't been spent in the past year (or two),
2) the fact that this shutdown over the wall affects border security (by shutting down Justice, Homeland Security, and the Coast Guard),
3) the fact that they don't yet know what type of wall to build (and they're talking fence now, anyway, which doesn't work very well),
4) AND the issue of negotiating with an extortionist (Trump)

Except Coulter was immediately critical of the proposal as "amnesty". If Trump keeps this up, eventually some air traffic controller or TSA inspector is going to get sloppy from overwork or worry about their finances, and we will have an incident. Trump "owns" it "proudly". What an ass.
