Lot of comments about the slowness. What are we talking about: nanoseconds, milliseconds, entire seconds, minutes? I know I'm getting old, but I don't think I'm short enough to be that concerned yet. 😈😈😈

I use Luminar 2018 as my main editor. I have many others, Capture One, On1, Affinity, Topaz, Gimp, etc., and have tried to use every one resulting in the determination that Luminar is by far the most intuitive and easy to use and it does everything I need which is most of what Lightroom does. The new release, Luminar 3 added the digital asset management system (DAM) to try to compete even more with Lightroom but it has a lot of bugs so I'm sticking with 2018 for now. It has a few bugs (Windows version) or inconveniences that I have reported to Luminar but it is still the easiest and best editor for my purposes.

Digital Asset Management, or more simply, the ability to catalog your photos.

I don't think anyone has actually answered your "user friendly" requirement. Picasa is very user friendly to a great extent because it's a very light weight program lacking a very significant amount of the functionality available in other software. In other words, there is much, much less to learn. Because there is much more functionality in more full featured programs like Luminar, Affinity and ON1 compared to Picasa, the learning curve will be significantly greater. Whether you are willing to invest the time and effort required to learn those programs is up to you. I suggest downloading the free trials for any of the software you are interested in and see for yourself whether its the right solution for you.

I started using Luminar 2018 last summer. The users' manual is comprehensive and was a big help in learning to use the program's features. It has been easy to use and I am extremely pleased with the results. The price was a not inconsiderable factor for a very active amateur and I have never regretted buying it. More experienced photographers may use it as a plug in, but I am quite happy with it as it stands.

Luminar 3 is a different matter. My biggest problem in even getting into DAM. This has prevented me from much exploration since I don't have the time I did last summer (surgery recovery and no classes to teach). What I can tell from the introductory stuff is that 3 disposes of its controls in a more condensed manner and I find 2018 easier and more instinctive to use. When time allows I am going to really dig into 3 and try using it more. I do wish they would simplify the DAM aspect. That said, I find 2018 to be my go to program and am very pleased with the output.

It’s now Luminar 3 and a very easy program to use. If you want the program to do the work, there are lots of presets with sliders. If you want to do it yourself, you can. I’m not a Photoshop user, so I can’t compare the two.
Have fun!

I use Luminar 2018 and Luminar3. I like them both and there are many YouTube videos to help you. Jim Nix has a very good series.

I have been using editions of Luminar for a few years, as a plug-in to Lightroom. I like Luminar 2018 very much, as well as Aurora and Spotheal. I downloaded Luminar 3 when it was first available and tried it out. The DAM was clunky and, in my hands, none of my keywording or location data came attached to the images. Frankly, I have not spent the time trying to figure out why my images in Luminar 3 failed to have some metadata as the overall visual operation of Luminar 3's DAM is not appealing. At this point there is no way I will leave Lightroom's DAM system for Luminar 3.

Thank you for your in-depth report. I have asked about Luminar 3 in this format and the response has been mixed. Library is not yet fully functional and skylum is working on ironing out the bugs. Can you please elaborate on where skylum is with library.
