In the smokebox shot, what is the round dark thing?
I'm guessing the screens is to breakup embers......
Is this a coal fired?
Enjoyed the series!
Thanks!

Hello Pat,
I was looking for something and I will admit that I forgot what it was when I opened the folder with the trip to Scranton, PA.
According to the information I read, the engine was built in 1917. (
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_National_3254 ) It was a coal burner. As for the item you are referring, I have seen something like that in oil burners. It was fed oil and lit to cause a flow of air upwards, pulling a draft from the cab forward. It would not surprise me if something like this was also used for coal burners, to move the air towards the stack. I will have to make a point to talk to someone more knowledgeable in the operation. Or dig out a book or two I have boxed that talk about operating the steam boilers. Perhaps, some one can chime in and educate both of us.
I am glad you enjoyed the group.

I agree. Steamtown and Electric City in Scranton, PA, are two places in which one can fill one's railroad rolling stock desires.
Thank you for checking in and commenting.

Hi Jay Pat. I suspect that the round dark thing is the steam blower used to create a draught through the boiler tubes and flues while the locomotive is stationary.
