Sounds to me you are all in the the "old and boring" dont cut feet off, dont cut heads off BLAH BLAH BALH, we dont all love a boring picture, Im sure there are 200+ straight photos in your wedding shoot, Im sure a few creative shots wont hurt...God DO something differant take a normal straight photo that tilt a few, is it really the end of the world???

what's wrong with giving the customer what they want? i always show the slanted shots and slanted crops...and the head cut off at the top......they always pick the straight shot so far. the competition in my area has your same attitude. i love it....because the dissatisfied customers come to me.

but then i am probably no way as good as you are. blah blah blah

I would encourage any photographer new or otherwise to learn the rules then spend your time learning to throw them out the window. Some things work, some things don't but don't ever get dissuaded because a bunch of old farts like us tell you that we don't care for it. Shoot. Shoot Often. Shoot for something different.

They only remember you for the rules you break!

You and Myphoto said the same thing. I'll remember yours.

I do not know how old you are but when a person is shelling out[paying out] $$$$ for wedding photos they want photos that they are happy with
and the subject here is wedding photos if you read the first thread here ot just slanted photos

I Agree It Isn't My Thing Either But If you Don't Do It On A Few Of your Wedding Or High School Senior Sessions Your Considered A SQUARE,Or Out Dated In your Style. In This As Well As All Business It's Customer Driven.

There is a reason that you see slanted photographs. When properly and judiciously used, they are artistic and pleasing. Unfortunately, being so frequently used, they have become no more than a Cliché - .

The problem is not the photograph - it is a photographer who has failed at an artistic attempt and has put his picture into a Xerox copy.

Because of parallax problems with range finders many years ago, Kodak came out with the solution of suggesting that an image always be centered. Therefore - no cutting off the top of heads. It worked, until we decided that there was more power in a composition if the main object was decentered and we went to another kind of balance.

I call cutting off the top of a head poor photography. Someone else may think it reminiscent of a Rembrant.

My sister recently got married, some photographs were a a slant. The strangest thing! She said it was suppose to be that way. I can't for the life of me figure this one out. Now, I see it more and more.
I hate to use the word, "stupid looking", but that is what it looks like to me.
Obviously, I'm not a pro. Any answers? I would love to solve this mystery!
Thanks,
Cindy

Wow, I had been seeing some wedding photos that were done recently and the same thing: shot on slants, lens flare, grainy look, not what I'd call professional looking at all. If I were paying a professional the big bucks, I would not be happy. But, that is my opinion...and you know what they say about that. ;) Cheryl

angle, smangle, take the picture the way you want. If others like it, great; if they don't, so what? If you're getting paid, do what the payer wants done. If you're doing it for yourself, have fun with it!

Its because they read in a photography magazine that it was new and trendy.. so then they all do it.. I agree one or two would be ok in a big photo shoot.but just like vignetting, it could get old real quick. It also comes from this "scrap book phase many are going through right now...lol

I wouldn't shoot a wedding with "slant" (come to think of it I don't have to do that anymore). But if you are shooting action sports (ie autoracing, soccer shots, bicycle racing, etc.) it generally puts more action feel in the shot. If the subject is on a flat, colorless background, anything to zip up the movement is preferred. Look at a few magazine photos to see what I mean. If the photo is dull and lifeless, Art Directors won't buy it.

I'm a newspaper editor, and many of the senior portraits we are given for the 'high school senior pages' are at an angle...putting those into one-column mug shot formats doesn't do these kids justice....

I know a guy who shoots like crazy with his smart phone.

I would say tha 85 out of 100 of his shots are taken on a 30-45 degree angle. After looking at a few pages of his Facebook I develop a severe kink in my neck.

Every now and then, the composition is fantastic and the technique works but he uses it way too much.

The only reason for a slanted shot would be for a really tall structure that you would like to record but couldn't fit in properly without chopping tops off etc. or can't get far enough away from. If you want to utilise 'angles' why not set the shot so that the angles are obviously deliberate for an artistic purpose. Portraits and weddings shots are definitely odd and just sloppy on the point of the photographer. Wouldn't pay a bent nickel for wedding photos on the slant that's for sure!! Hey Cindy your photo on the slant or not looks pretty good to me!!!
