Problem is that the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens does not have image stabilization. Do I need that? Is there a better option? I shoot with a Canon 7D

Yes, a better solution, facial stabilizer and monopod with body stabilizer.

I bought the Tamron 24-70 with Is a year ago. I use it a lot and am very happy with it.

Tough call. I own a 7D. I love it for outside, but it does suffer in low light.. You may want to look at the newer Tamron 24-70 f2.8 G2 model which is stabilized. Other than that would consider a 1.8 or even a 1.4 prime. Cheaper and possibly a tad sharper. I was having similar problems and just picked up a used 6D. Not yet put it through any major trials yet, but I think it will solve my low light problem. When the wallet recovers, will be looking for a 24-105 f/4 IS for the main lens.

I have a Canon 1DX Mk2 and I normally shoot with a Canon 24-70 f/2.8 II. The last time I was shooting I replaced the 24-70 with a Canon 24-105 f/4 to get some extra focal length. The 24-105 was soft compared to the 24-70. I promptly took the 24-105 off my 1DX mk2 and put it back on my 5D mk3 where it normally sits.

The Sigma and Tamron equivalents have IS (Vc, or OS - wish they would use common names) and are full frame compatible, if that is important.

Why not rent and see how they suit you?

I am looking to upgrade my lens. I haven't done so in 12 years. Currently I have 15-85mm f3.5-5.6, with (IS). I am interested in Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens. $$$. I shoot in churches a lot and I need a low light lens. Problem is that the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens does not have image stabilization. Do I need that? Is there a better option? My choice for this focal length is the Sigma 17-70 "C." It has stabilization and has a maximum aperture of f2.8 varying to f4 at the 70mm end. It is fase, sharp and the stabilization is very good. It costs about $450 at Adorama. It is a similar size and weight to the highly touted EF-S15-85. I like it so much that when my original was stolen, I tried to rationalize the 15-85, but couldn't justify it because, it was priced too high, weighed too much. I bought another Siggy 17-70.

I've had great results with the lens, and the f4 produces great Bokeh and background separation at 70mm for portraits. I've used it inside at wedding receptions and events at 400 ISO bumping to 800 on my old 50D with great results. It is a super performer with my new 24MPX 77D.

What are you shooting in churches? Weddings? Architecture? If Architecture, you might want to consider the Sigma 18-35 1.8.
