You are a better person than I. Those things are nearly unreadable! I occasionally use them for specific reference work, but rely on the huge number of better written and relatively inexpensive third party books for general instruction.

Steve Perry for the downloads, David Busch's Field Guide for the D500 (or the big D500 book) Darrell Young's guidebooks are all great resources. For quick and dirty the David Busch field guides are portable, easy to read, and you can find what you desire quickly (they are also ring bound so they are easy to open and hold the page). I have several and they are a quick and easy resource. Darrell Youngs books also reference the Nikon Manual pages for quick cross-reference. Check Ebay and other booksellers.

I agree with “old johnnie” Darrell Young’s “Mastering theD500” is excellent in its step by step tour through the D500. It travels with me all the time. The D500 has so many fine features it is easy to forget how to use them all. Steve Perry’s tips is a great follow up once you are familiar with the camera.
I second the Darrell Young "Mastering..." book recommendation. I cannot recommend the Busch book, too many errors in the two I used in my earlier years.

Even with outside sources of help, you still should read through the manual. Don't fret over what you do not understand, just keep going. Then read the manual again, with camera in hand. Get to know where all the controls are located, and practice using them to see what they do. The manual will have a section on how to set up the camera, which is also an excellent place to find useful information.
The manuals have improved a great deal since I got my first DSLR 7 years ago. So they really are more readable. There is just so much information to absorb, making it difficult to get through the whole manual. Keep the manual with you so you can look up things you forget or are not sure how to proceed when shooting.
I purchased Steve Perry's eBook about Nikon's focus system, which is excellent. Learning the focus system is NOT just about a narrow topic, because pretty much everything in a camera is interrelated! He even includes camera-specific information, since there are some significant differences to be found in various models.
When you have something for which you still need answers, pose the question and you will undoubtedly get more advice than you can imagine! There are plenty of helpful, knowledgeable people on UHH.
Try your public library, Alachua Library allows you to download 20, yes twenty books at a time, epubs, audio books and videos.
