Colonoscopy

If you're over fifty years old, you should get a colonoscopy. It's not as bad as you might think, since you are "out of it" during the procedure. The worst part - which doesn't deserve the word "worst" - is the prep the night before to clean out your system. I get one every few years. The alternative is to die of colon cancer.

I had mine done on Thursday, and I was up and around shortly after. If your insurance covers it, it's very cheap insurance against really bad news sometime down the line.

And now that I’m over 70 I don’t have to get one anymore. Yippee.

Been there done it twice, got the T-shirt.
You are right about one thing, the prep is far worse the the actually procedure.
If you have medicare, it will pay for this.

Did not know that.
(I know someone in his 80s that had one done.)

I'm 64, and I've had four of them. My Dad died from colon cancer, so my siblings and I have each been on the program since age 50. A couple of polyps, here and there, and you become convinced of the need for colonoscopies.

Colon cancer is one of the most common cancers that people die from. It is also one of the few cancers that is preventable! If precancerous polyps are removed early, the disease may be avoided. Colon cancer is rarely symptomatic until advanced. Early detection with colonoscopy can be life saving.
Follow Jerry ‘s advice and talk to your doctor about colon cancer prevention/detection with a colonoscopy.

Has nothing to do with photography ..., unless it is meant as a Older Hog crowd preventive measure to keep some of us older Hogs from checking out early and thus robbing us of some great posts ..,

I went in for my 5 year colonoscopy.., you quested it ..I was wheeled directing into a room and told surgery would be in the morning .. colon cancer ..they cut out the culprit ..,about 12 “ ..and I am healthy today and have a regular colonoscopy every 5 years .. my next one is in 6 months .., I’m 73 now .. 😎👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾

A less uncomfortable option is Cologuard, an at home p00p in a bag, place in a special prepaid UPS box and send to the laboratory. My health insurance paid 100% of the costs. My physician prescribed/ordered the kit and it was UPS'd to me.

Interesting side note: my UPS driver recognized the box and encouraged me to use it right away. He survived colon cancer and is an advocate of periodic testing. If anyone is putting off getting tested I suggest you don't delay any longer. If you won't listen to your doctor, listen to my UPS guy.

Our senior citizen group had a health expert come in and give us each a private interview about our eating habits and to make recommendations. I told him that I like ice cream. He said something like, "I see my job as getting people to 70. After that, they can eat all the ice cream they want." Good answer.

I was over 70 four years ago.

He means as soon as any body reaches 70 and beyond, you are free to do whatever you want to because your time is coming and should enjoy yourself before it's too late! I got that, but I prefer going in a east way with out suffering! My late father died from colon cancer at age 68, and going through almost 2 years suffering before passing away, and when he died his body weight was 79 lbs down from almost 180 lbs. That was a terrible suffering!!

Thanks, that's probably good advise, but no, not for me, I do not have insurance and I'm already hopelessly behind in medical bills!

My son has insurance, sort of. He pays a weekly premium, and he has a huge deductible with limited access to doctors. The doctor he has been using all his life does not accept the insurance he now has. Basically, the ER is his doctor. In any other developed country, he would have medical coverage, but the USA can't afford to keep its people healthy. I have decent coverage from work, so I'm lucky. It's unfortunate that people have to be "lucky" to be able to go to a doctor's office.
