Since you're relatively new, you may not have had a chance to check out all the features of the site, including "newest pictures" - a link accessible at the top of every page. Those thumbnail images will help you filter out any subjects not of interest. There are also many specialty forums where you will be unlikely to stumble upon moons or sunsets. Click on "all sections" at the bottom of the page to browse.

And lastly, consider hosting a discussion topic about how to make moon or sunset photos something other than "identical." Please join the small group who would like to see UHH be about learning/sharing/teaching/inspiring and don't align with the grumpy old folks who are here only to complain. Let's learn together!

As always, excellent commentary from you Linda! BTW, nothing "identical" about your photographic examples!

Linda, I enjoyed #1 and #4, as I am very interested in compositing. I too have benefited from your comments/suggestions in the speciality forums, it's one of the reasons I'm a member of UHH. Bev

I was finally successful in adding a moon to my Baltimore skyline where it would never naturally appear because the view over our harbor faces north. Finally figured out how to use layers in photoshop and the CC version's eraser tool works like a charm to make the background black sky transparent and show the dusky deep blue of the skyline photo. Next clear night of a full or nearly full moon I plan to compile a series of moons with 105mm and 300mm lenses in various positions in the frame to keep in a "moons" folder for later incorporation into other photos. From there I will do the same with various moon phases so that I have considerable flexibility. Fun to come. Pat

Now that a new Super Blood Moon is soon to appear, how many shots are we going to see posted. I photographed the full moon with my Nikon P900, since then I have photographed the full moon, blood moon, blue moon and silver moon in 2016, 2017 and 2018 and they are all identical. Same thing with sunsets and sunrises, yes they are pretty and red but one looks just like the next one. As the arrogant Moose Petersen says if you dont have a background or foreground "you don't have a shot"

I agree with you, I have taken so many moon and sunset images that do nothing for me , they are difficult subjects, the moon moves so quickly in a long lens you have to be fast! It is just to easy to add a moon in photoshop that kills the fun and challenge to me. but when I hit something I like it is worth it.
All subjects need composition for the story, birdsmoons, sunsets and people.

No two sunsets are the same either...each one has its own uniqueness.

Terrific.

Here the lunar winds have deposited some surface scaling onto the burned ridge and spur line. Regrettably, lunar scales retard development of both deciduous and coniferous trees so it will take 60 or more years to see significant growth. Often there is evidence of lunatics being deposited along with the scaling. (Sorry I don't have photos comparable to Linda's)

What I've learned about sunsets, sunrises, blue hour skies, moons etc is that while they can be spectacular, unless the one you're photographing right now IS spectacular, they are really cool interesting and colorful backgrounds for suitable subjects. As usual, I agree with Moose, in that without a foreground and a background AND a SUBJECT (thank You Dale Boyer my Photo 1 Prof) there IS NO PHOTOGRAPH!

And as far as Moose Petersen is concerned, It ain't arrogant if you can do it! And he delivers.

Thanks! #1 is a composite, and those are sunrises just 'cause I'm an early bird
