I don't think that pallets are what you want to use, I get them and burn them in my fireplace. At first I tried taking them apart and pulling the nails, lol forget that idea. 99% of the time the boards break. Even with the board gone it is not easy to get the nails out. Now I just run the skill saw or chain saw down the edge and then cut the 2X4 in half. Nice clean wood that I can store in the house and no bugs. I have seen at our lumber yard wood that is not good enough to sell for housing. It is stacked off to side, after a while it gets cut up into 2' pieces and put in the dumpster. I have never asked but maybe they wood, lol sell it cheap.

Try graigslist. You can put a wanted ad in. Also look in the "free" I see them all the time for just hauling them away.

Home depot can probably help you , check down at the contractors end, where they pick up their supplies.

Try a farmer (esp of orchards) or a grocery store that uses lots of pallets, they can tell you where they come from and maybe give you that contact information. I currently work in a grocery store.
Good Luck.

caution on using pallets, they are made of Oak (very hard) and they are grade 3 and worse, I.E. lots of splinters.

Agreed Youll bend a lot of nails. And buy a lot of bandaids.

...lots of splinters...and nothing stings quite like a oak splinter.

Yup, they (the splinters) tend to be barbed...

I agree with those who suggest that pallets would not be the greatest material for building purposes. Having said that, the newspaper in my town gets a lot of supplies trucked in on pallets. They are stacked up after they are unloaded and offered for "free" to whoever wants to come and haul them away. Try your local newspaper.
You're doing a good thing for your kids, mom!

thanks everyone I don't need splinters so I guess I'll have to look into a different type of wood something more affordable any ideas

do you have a budget in mind? No budget is ok, just means this project will be done with salvage materials which isn't a bad plan at all. But, if you do have some $ to spend on it...
