You have a VERY good point there. Give some schmuck a 2 thousand dollar camera with a 1500. dollar lens on it??? Hell no.

I hope you aren't expecting some schlub you hand your camera to to suddenly give you an Ansel Adams quality shot. Tell him this button focuses and this button shoots. The rest is pot luck. And then PRAY he doesn't run off with the damn thing. LOL

Clever.

If I hand my camera to somebody, usually that is outdoors in bright light. I set it up first including focus, and choose an f-stop that facilitates wide DOF. However I have found that most people understand if I simply say "focus using this button and shoot by pressing this button".

Not in the slightest.

And not to anyone, referring to mostly friends at gatherings.
I don't do tourist photos with me in them, unless my wife wants to take the photo.

Fine if you do that or are using multi-point focusing and evaluative metering,
not so well with one point focusing and spot metering.

I am most apt to hand over my not so new 12mp Point and Shoot Camera aka my iPhone 7+ with 128gb memory with full insurance with a $600 replacement cost than $4k camera set up ... even at events where non/member guests offer to take the photo. I will take several views adjusting people, etc. and show the more novice than me volunteer the photos, set up again and then they just need to hold the phone and touch the big white button - sometimes that doesn’t go well and I just submit photos without me in them ... 😉

Good idea. I'll check my cameras for the same thing. It's almost impossible to explain BBF.

Yeah, you’re so right. BBF is way too difficult for mere mortals to understand. It’s like trying to explain space exploration to a caveman. Soooo, here’s what I do > ensure the body is in aperture priority and the aperture is set to f/11. Pre-focus before handing the camera to the moron I’ve asked to snap a pic of my wife and I OR just ask said moron to press the AF-On button before the shutter. I don’t need to explain nothin cuz they woodn’t get it no how. Not everyone can be a photographer like us here.

I never hand my cameras to anyone and my wife has her own Nikon set up the way she wants.

When I describe to my doctor that my shoulder hurts when I raise it to the right and above my neck he says, "Don't do that. It won't hurt."
So do the same - don't hand it to the guy with an Instamatic".

I just had that experience. I gave the camera to a guy who nodded and said he understood, took a group picture and it was out of focus. He must have focused on the background.

Or "pushed" the shutter rather than "press" (squeeze).

Haven't had trouble explaining BBF: " press this button to focus, then this to take the picture" What I have to remember is to explain how to adjust the eyepiece diopter so that things don't look blurry even if they are in focus!
