So far I'm happy with the most resent purchase of refurbished M6 from shop.canon.com However, support, my profile account page and a few other issues using canon support, It's made me avoid canon products in the future. Because if these issues, I was very tempted to return the M6 & 50mm lens. But the wife talked me out of it.

As mentioned above, if you already have the lenses, then try either the M50, M5 or M6 the only reason I didn't go with the M50 or M5 is because I'm no longer about to use the view finder option and must resort to the slightly larger view screen, but even then, I may have to go even larger with a tethered tablet. The only thing I see with using the FD, EF & EF-S on any of the M camera, you'll have to purchase either the Can adapter or the less expensive Fotodiox version (which I've been happy with) then there's the fact that if the lens or lenses are FD type, you'll have to resort to manually adjustments of the aperture and focusing.

It is decent, delivering results similar to the EOS 80D dSLR, but there are other, better, mirrorless options IF you don't already own Canon lenses. If you have Canon or Canon-compatible glass, it's a very reasonable choice. Only about 8 native lenses are listed on WikiPedia, but most any EF or EF-S mount lens can be adapted with Canon's fully functional adapter.

I wouldn't be surprised if Canon abandons the M series cameras, just as Nikon ditched its 1 series. But even if they do, the M will work with EOS EF/EF-S lenses. So it's a safe buy.

Note that Canon also makes a full frame mirrorless, too, the EOS-R. It's a first generation try, and like Nikon's Z6 and Z7, released to mixed reviews (high highs, annoying lows). I and many others will be more interested in the next generations of FF mirrorless from Canon and Nikon.

Panasonic, Olympus, Fujifilm, and Sony (in no particular order, since each has a niche) are the technology leaders in mirrorless. If you don't already have a collection of lenses, I'd look at them, first.

The only problem I have experienced with my a6000 is that it is too small and too easy to inadvertently change settings. Will be sticking with DSLR for photos and eventually hook the Sony to a crane for video. I also love using both systems but not all for the same thing. That said, the M5 looks like a good choice for getting into MILC's. Let us know how it works out.

I agree that you should rent or at least try to get a feel for the different models. If you get a Canon mirrorless and hv canon dslr glass, adaptation may be ok if your not shooting for fast autofocus (needed for shooting sports/birds).

I have been shooting the Panasonic LUMIX GX8 with several lenses in Europe and the US for almost a year and find it to be excellent! It is light and has all of the features you would like for an advanced amateur. The 12-60mm LUMIX Lens was just the lens for both street shooting and for landscapes. I also took my NIKON D750 with two zoom lenses to Wales and Paris and found it too heavy and not as flexible as the LUMIX. I have not shot the NIKON Z7 or Z6 or the Canon as yet but I feel the Canon has more features than the NIKON Mirror-Less cameras and better lenses initially.
