Hi,
My husband and I are going on a Baja whale watching trip for twelve days in early March. The trip also includes a day at the San Diego zoo. We are arriving one day early as we are using frequent flyer miles and therefore had a limited selection of flights. We will be staying in a Ramada Inn near the airport. Are there any wildlife viewing opportunities near where we will be staying? Can anybody suggest other things to do on the free day? We are definitely outdoorsy people, more interested in the natural world than museums or even boats and ships. Thanks in advance!

The San Diego Zoo (generally considered the best zoo in the world) and Balboa Park are enough
for several days of rapt sightseeing. Chances are you will spend all day at the zoo.
Balboa Park. Many very good museums.
(Sorry, just saw you were not interested in museums. The zoo is outdoors and, as previously mentioned, is an all day adventure.)

If you are renting a car, drive up into the mountains. You are already going to the zoo, you may want to see Sea World as well. You could drive to the desert as well. Check out a web site called roadtrippers.com. Use your hotel as your starting point, then use Los Angeles as your destination, and it will give you locations of interest along the path. Not suggesting you go to Los Angeles, although it would be a great day trip, but just use the city as a reference point to see what is of interest between San Diego and Los Angeles.
Take a drive out to Cabrillo National Monument. Bring your grippy hiking boots and get close to the ocean edge (tide pools)
That sounds like a good idea. We are already going to the zoo, we don’t care for museums, and the Point Loma tide pools will not be available until low tide late in the aftrenoon when we need to be getting back to the hotel for the welcome dinner.

Then the waves should really be crashing.
The San Diego Zoo has a daily opening ceremony that is second to none. You need to be at the zoo about 20 minutes before they open. You will be allowed into a courtyard area before the ceremony begins. It's worth the entire day. Keep your cameras ready with a high shutter speed.[

Plan your next visit. Lots to see, to hard to recommend one.
When you go to the zoo we took the $99 guided tour. They drive you around, get you behind the scenes and you get to feed the giraffes. Well worth the money. It's a very long walk so the driving tour is great and you get to see stuff that you wouldn't ordinarily see.
Short drive to the top of My. Helix or Mt. Soladad. 15 min. either one.
The Sandiego River is A great place to do birding,3mile paved walk bike path. Formosa slough pond also close by.
Cabrillo is closed due to govt. shutdown.
Check out Sweetwater Marsh NWR - just a few miles south of Balboa Park.
