I condensed the quote for emphasis. The wider the angle subtended by the lens, the greater the edge distortions, which are the product of attempting to put the image on a flat surface. For a lot of situations, especially ones where important elements are near the edges of the frame, it is better to take a series of narrower photos and stitch them into a panorama--this process greatly reduces the effect of edge distortion. (For Heaven's Sake, don't use an extreme wide angle lens to take a photo of a group of people, particularly if any females are at the sides! They don't like being made to look fatter! )

Fatter ? Are you implying that they are already fat ?

Not necessarily. A thin person can be "fatter" than a VERY skinny person.... :)

I bought the Nikkor 16-80mm f2.8 for my D3300 and I love it! Crisp, fast, very bright. I added a new body, a D850 which is an FX format and it still works great. It just crops the sensor but still sharp.

This is the best site I know on how to get good information on lenses. I spent many hours on it yesterday to help me determine the best lenses for a D810 I hope to buy. It really saved me from making some bad decisions! You pick the lenses you want to see data on. It will compare 3 at a time and you can also tell it to test them on a specific camera. Very cool. You don't even have to know the lens name, it will list most of the lenses made by most manufacturers. So if you are looking for a wide angle zoom, you just go down the list until you see the zooms you're interested and select them. Be sure to check out Tamron and Sigma. I was shocked to see that, for instance, that the Sigma 24mm f1.4 lens beat out the similar nikon lenses. Same for a 70-200 zoom...Tamron reigned King. Good luck.

To take advantage of the full frame on you D850, you may want to consider a 24-120 f4 which is the same as your 16-80 2.8-4 on the D3300.
Nikon also used this lens as a kit lens, and you can get a mint one off ebay at a very reasonable price.

Extreme wide angles are not necessarily useful for landscape photography.

I use a Tokina 11-16 and find it very useful for landscape work at times it is what I need for the composition. If you are shooting a small pond one can make it appear like a lake.

You would probably benefit with a Nikon 16-35, A Tamron 15-30 or a Nikon 14-24.

If you want your pictures to look more natural, I wouldn't recommend any lens much shorter than 50mm. For a wider field of view, employ panorama stitching.

I'm looking forward to a 14-24 f2.8 I just bought gently used for almost a thousand bucks. That will bolster the bottom end and I'll probably add something on the long end next. The D3300 still works fine so I currently carry that with the 16-80 and the D850 with my 70-200 f2.8 G.

Like other responders to your post, I also have the Tokina 11-16 2.8 and am quite pleased with it.

Hello, Daisy,

Do you mean:
* ultra-wide to wide zoom, such as the Sigma 10-20 mm, or
* wide to normal (or slightly beyond) zoom,
* ultra-wide to normal (not recommended, IMHO)?

Information on the approximate focal range will help insure that the answers
you get are relevant to your needs. So would information on how you plan
to use the lens and some idea of your budget.

Ultra-wide is defined anything below 24 mm for full-frame, or below
15.4 mm for your DX camera.

Cnsiderations:

Some current zooms do go ultra-wide to normal, but the shortest setting may
not be as rectilinear (distortion free) as you'd get in, say, a 10-20 mm zoom
or an 15 mm prime of equal quality construction.

Whether or not distortion is noticable depends on the subject. For some types
of photography (e.g., of archtecture), distoration is very noticable.

Ultra-wide is useful only in special situations. So, if you have a specific interest
in ultra-wide, you might want to consider a specialized lens--otherwise, you
might want to skip it.

'All zoom lens designs involve compromises. The greater the focal range,
the greater the the compromises.

Zoom lens products are created in respond to consumer demand. People want
one lens that can do anything---and they can have it!--provided they aren't too
particular about image quality.

If consumers want a 50X zoom, someone will make one. A good manufactuer
that spares no expense can make a 50X zoom as good as it can be....which isn't
saying much. The world's best compact racing dump truck may be expensive and
top quality, but it isn't a good car...or a good truck.

You can spend big bucks on the best possible good lens, or you can spend even
biggger bucks on the least bad bad lens---the choice is yours.

Too bad, many of us forget that Nikon has severe compatibility problems with its AF cameras and lenses.
Just need that scorecard to keep track of all the incompatibility issues they have.

It can be confusing to some. For the literate, Nikon thoughtfully includes a list of compatible lenses in their camera manuals.
