A different sort of Bald Eagle Sequence

Normally we associate Eagles as the predator, or at least an aggressive defender of its catch. We (my son, wife and I) were at Bombay Hook in Delaware this summer and I was able to get a rather unusual eagle sequence. I used a Sony a99ii along with the Sony 500 f/4, hand-held, to capture a Red-winged Blackbird and an Eastern Kingbird escorting an eagle away from a defended area. These are not edited in any way but are posted for the novelty.

It's not as unusual as you may think. Large raptors are seen as a threat by smaller birds, which are quicker and very aggressive at trying to protect their nesting areas. Jays, blackbirds, mockingbirds...these are other species likely to take on a large raptor...darting in to peck the larger, slower birds. And then there are the crows and ravens. They are very social species and smart enough to gang up on a raptor to protect their colonies and nesting areas. The work together with a strategy. I've seen them drive a large hawk into a tree then land just out of reach in nearby branches to harass the raptor, driving it further and further into the branches of the tree and following it if it tries to escape. When satisfied that the raptor has moved far enough away that it is no longer a threat and been taught a lesson, they'll fly back to the area being protected. jak

Not an uncommon event... I posted a series a while ago with one redwing attacking an eagle... The eagle won... The redwing was just a nuisance.

Nice series you caught there
