Obamas Securtary of Defense Ashton Carter had no military experience either, which I find rather disturbing as well.

Awh the barking dog returns
Ashton Carter
BA - Yale University, double major in physics and Midieavil History, graduating Suma cum Laude, Phi Beta Kapa
D.Phil from Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar
Postdoctoral Research Associate at Rockefeller University
Joined the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University where he became chair of International & Global Affairs and Ford Foundation of Science and International Affairs
He's currently the Director of he Belfer Center for International Affairs at Harvard Kennedy School
Carter started his career at the Department of Defense in 1983, and worked his way up through the ranks in various positions with increasingly more responsibilities and international experience.
Patric Shanahan
BS - University of Washington, degree in mechanical engineering
MS -MIT, degree in Mechanical Engineering
MBA -MIT Sloan School of Management.
Personally I find Aston Carter the better educated and more well rounded individual having studied international affairs who was better suited to take over as Secretary if Defense over Patrick Shanahan who's background is in mechanical engineering and has worked in the private sector in manufacturing.
There is hands down no comparison between both of these men. Aston Carter can walk circles around Patrick Shanahan's private sector experience! Carter worked at the Department of Defense for 22 years before he was tapped to become Secretary of Defense!

So over 22 years of working for the Department of Defense is a disqualifer in your closed little mind?
Patrick Shanahan has NO experience working with the military on a daily basis, in 2016, he became a SVP of Supply Chain Management or more commonly known as a "Buyer" for Boeing.
No matter how you look at it, Aston Carter was far more qualified to be Secretary of Defense, than Patrick Shanahan is.
trump continues to nominate or elevate totally unqualified people to serve in his administration because they'll yes him to death instead of checking his ill-advised and often illegal gut instincts.

Notice he was a physicist. You know a person who knows about nukes!
Now don't look the fool that you are!
Carter began his career as a physicist. He studied at Yale University (BA), the University of Oxford (D.Phil.) as a Rhodes Scholar, and Rockefeller University (postdoctoral research associate). After a brief experience as an analyst for the Congressional Office of Technology Assessment, he switched careers to public policy. He joined the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in 1984 and ultimately rose to become chair of the International & Global Affairs faculty and Ford Foundation Professor of Science & International Affairs.[2] He is presently Director of the Belfer Center for Science & International Affairs at Harvard Kennedy School.[3] Carter is author or co-author of 11 books and more than 100 articles on physics, technology, national security, and management.
Carter served as Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Policy during President Clinton's first term, from 1993 to 1996, responsible for policy regarding the former Soviet states, strategic affairs, and nuclear weapons policy. During President Obama's first term, he served first as Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics and then Deputy Secretary of Defense until December 2013. In February 2015, he replaced Chuck Hagel as Secretary of Defense and served until the end of the Obama administration.[4]

Yeah, that “Midieavil History” degree came in handy when implementing Obama’s dated policies and drawing of lines in the sand!
