Something new from old times.

Last night I had something that has never happened before.
We have lived in our house for the last 47 years and as we were watching TV there was a knock on our door.
When we opened the door there were about 15 people standing on our walk singing us a X-Mas Carol.
I had to hold back tears.
It was beautiful.

It does seem to be a lost tradition and something I haven’t participated in recently enough.

Back in the fifties that was tradition, especially for the elderly and shut ins. Some times if they new you were coming the would have hot chocolate or cider and invite the carolers in. Some old traditions needs to be revived as the you get a satisfaction of putting a smile on some one face less fortunate. It seems as we get older the old days seem better.

I agree, I'm about to turn 80 in Feb. and I remember my dad, when he was 93, talking about the old days.
I find myself doing the same thing.

Did that at nursing homes back with my high school German Club in 1974. Sang the carols in German. The faces on the residents lit up. It was beautiful.

I agree totally. I will be 81 in Febr. & remember the caroling very well. Gradually,it seemed to occur less & less in the last several years. Somebody must have complained about it or else we all just got so busy that we lost our enthusiasm for it.

Still remember caroling one Christmas when I was 6 or 7. We went to a blind lady's house and she insisted we come to warm up. She was upset she didn't have anything to serve us, then remembered a package of "redhots" in her kitchen cabinet. Of course her blindness was interesting to us and someone asked her if she liked winter. With a smile she said "No", stating that during winter she didn't get much sleep. When asked why, she said "During winter I put on my wool pajamas, take my Braille Bible to bed, pull the covers over my head and read all night."

At the risk of sounding like an old guy (which I am) It sure is a different world today and it doesn't seem to be getting any better. However I have faith in humanity, and a brighter tomorrow.
