After hearing all the good things about refurbished cameras, I decided to order a SL2 for my Christmas gift. The web site said it was in-stock and I could get Free 2 day shipping. Sounded great.. but after a week, I called to check and they say it is backordered. It is still listed as in-stock on their Web site. Disappointing to me. Looks like a late Christmas gift.

Shit happens. Have another eggnog and relax. There's nothing you can do about it.
Any item may always be "subject to prior sale"
I ordered from the Canon Store.

Over the years, I have purchased thousands of dollars of refurbished cameras and lenses from the Canon website. After you finally receive your stuff you won't be disappointed. Obviously, someone beat you to the punch.

That sounds like my efforts to buy a car. They are listed on dealers' web sites, but they do not actually exist. Order from a "name brand" dealer - Cameta Camera comes to mind - and you will get good service.

Cameta is a reputable dealer, I have dealt with them in the past to total satisfaction.
With refurbs they offer a one year warranty, not 90 days like so many others.

Hope you get it soon. This is my camera that’s always with me for casual shooting because of the weight.
A late Christmas gift is still better than no gift.
I have Canon equipment now and it looks like Cameta Refurbs are Nikon. Thanks anyway.
In the US, Canon refurbished are now only sold direct from the Canon USA website. They no longer sell them through dealers.
If you see a Canon "refurb" at a retailer, it's not a "factory refurb". It may be a local "store refurb", which is also known as a "used item".
Canon factory refurbs have been checked and, if needed, brought into factory specification. They are little different from and have the same warranty as new.
Store refurbs or used equipment usually has a 90 to 180 day warranty and might be just as good as new... or not.
Nikon still sells refurbs through dealers, as well as direct from their own USA website. They only started selling direct in the last year or two, and only offer a 90 day warranty (like used) on their refurbs.
Refurbs aren't always the best deal. Especially during holiday and post-holiday sales, you might actually find brand new items selling for less. A couple years ago I was all set to buy a couple refurbs, but found I could actually do better buying new. The reason is that when the instant rebates and mail-in rebates are offered during the sale periods, they only apply to new items. The refurbs may go on sale at times, too.... separately. But it pays to check both.
