I have an opportunity to purchase a used Nikon D90. Body and lens. I'm going to look at it next week and because this is a definite upgrade from what I currently own, I'd like to know if anyone has one, what do you like/dislike about it? What should I look for, if anything, that reads 'buyer beware'? I consider it to be a low-level professional camera, am I right? Thanks.

I own two Nikon D90 s they are one of the best cameras I have ever owned I use them mostly for trap focus. I also own a Nikon d750 and a Nikon d810. I have own on a Nikon d610 but sold it due to it not haven't trap focus. I take most of my bird pictures using trap Focus that way I do not have set and just wait.

Hope this help to answer your question.

Any DSLR can be a professional model. But, when the D90 was popular, it was an advanced / mid-range camera. Below are a few relevant links as background. Recognize the camera went out of production in 2010, so the one you inspect is somewhere between 8- and 10-years old. They have them listed used at KEH for $272. You should consider $200 to $250 to be a fair price for a private sale where there's no return option if a problem develops, like you can to KEH.

The D90 was a very good DX camera. Depending on the condition of the camera you are looking at there is no reason why it won't still take great photos. The D90 was discontinued somewhere around 2010 so the technology is old, but like I said it should still take good pictures.

I quite like the D90, I have used mine with the 18-200 VR lens for 'run and gun' portraits at events for years. I use an SB-600 flash mounted on camera and bounce off the ceiling whenever possible. I generally get very good results. I also like the fact that you can output a .jpg file that is 1MP for online use. The battery lasts a long time, I remember doing 275 shots at one event and the battery still showed 3/4. The only problem I ever had with it was with the kit lens. At times it would show E in the top display and would not do anything. I found that if I released the lens mount button and turned the lens slightly and then snapped it back in place, it would work. That problem went away with the 18-200 VR. AF is reasonably fast and it will do just about everything you need to do. I think the D90 is a great camera and they are reasonably priced now.

The D90 is a solid camera, granted older technology but, it does take good pictures. Remember it's more about the glass than the body anyway. I purchased one (D90) at a yard sale a year and a half ago for 200.00 and it came with a 50mm f/1.8 attached, an older 8 Gig SD card and a small camera bag, and it only had a 1600+ shutter count on it, a real bargain. I actually considered it an upgrade from the D3300 I'd gotten for father's day the year before due to the additional functionality (like commander mode for off camera flash and an in body lens drive motor etc.)

If it's in good condition you won't regret the purchase, I don't shoot video so it's a non-issue for me that it only supports 720p as it was one of the first dslrs to offer video. The below image was shot with Nikon 60mm f/2.8 micro/macro lens. Good luck and happy shooting to you.

Actually, I don't have a D90. I DO have a pair of D80s- like a D90 with no video.
They are very nice cameras, take great pics, use the standard Nikon "F" mount lenses.
Don't plan on printing too much larger than 8x10s? You won't notice any limitations.
The 8x10s will come out nice, tho.
THAT said, Fleabay has D3100s and D3200s for @ that same estimated price. More modern, more mps, more support, etc.
I'd say up to $150. Most of "us" are a few years behind in our heads. But that camera was great 10 years ago. Pretty good 5 years ago. Kinda old outmoded today.
Look at KEH and Nikon for refurb deals, to put a perspective towards modern $ worth.
In the meantime, when you look at it, take some pictures. Does it focus quick, and well? Look at the screen of the picture review- is the subject in the middle of the out of focus areas? Do all the buttons look good, and work? No errors in "P" mode? Video looks good? Be aware there will be a short but sweet learning curve. But that's OK, too.

I have a D90 that I carry as a backup for my D800. The D90 is probably one of the best 12Mp cameras ever made. It is well made, small and light weight and has all the features you will need until you are ready to spend serous money. Unless you regularly make really large color prints (>11" x 14"), you will be very happy with that choice.

Great camera. I've owned one since they came out, the only limitation is noise at high ISO (800 and up)

I owned a D80 and upgraded as soon as the D90 came out. I married it to the Nikon 18-200 VR zoom and have had great success with both, shooting everything from model sessions, automotive, architectural to landscapes. I sell my photos online and at art shows through the year. Great 12 megapixel DX camera; solid construction.

Years ago I had a D90 with an 18-200 lens. The camera is a good camera. I never had a problem with it.
