I bought a used mirrorless camera just to see how I liked it, and to see if I wanted to change. I had thought about buying a full frame mirrorless. I bought a Sony 500, I know it's not full frame, but is mirrorless, I had to buy new lens, extra batteries and extra's like for most cameras. I found it was not comfortable in my hands, I felt it was too light for me. I was more comfortable with the DSLR. I'm not changing, most of my camera's use the same batteries and lens. I like the way they feel in my hand and decided not to change what I have.

You bought a Sony cybershot camera at the very lowest end of Sony's mirrorless line.A sub-APS-C camera. Not really a model to compare with your DSLRs. You should have tried an APS-C A6000 series camera (the best selling mirrorless at Amazon) or looked into the fullframe A7 lineup like the A7III, the DPreview 2018 Camera of the year.
Good one --- I like it & due to age totally deserve it!!
In my defense however even when I was a 1,000 years younger I was never what is now termed "an early adopter"
My basic point is that at this stage in it's technological development the full frame mirrorless as compared with the DSLR.
The full frame Mirrorless appears to me to provide far less benefits to the user then the DSLR
However having said that the DSLR prior to the Canon 5D Mkii was benefits wise behind my Canon EOS3 Film SLR ---
Of course ONLY this old guys opinion

I don't think it is a matter of better but different, there are pluses and minuses. I have mirrorless, because I went from a film Canon with FD lenses that wouldn't work with any DSLR, to digital and so mirroless was my only choice. The pluses in my opinion are, well 1st the endless lenses sources via an adapter, and for stuff like macro, I don't want auto focus and don't miss it on wide angle. Two is the EVF, what you see is what you get and for manual focus I love the focus aids. To some degree the size, when mated with the right lens. My a7ii makes a small, almost pocketable camera with the 35 2.8 Ziess on it. The one minus is the auto focus speed but that is changing with Sony's latest offerings, my a6500 with 70-300 on it if very fast focus. If I had a DSLR system, I don't think there is enough pluses that I would switch to a mirroless system. But I'm cheap and hate to re buy glass.

I agree as my older lenses that, I do so enjoy, will hit the mirror of the DSLRS. With an adaptor and a mirrorless camera, I can still use them most of my older lens. This helps to save money also. I am not saying that older lenses are better. They are not, unless you happen to like the particular look that they give.

I have 3 canon 1d series bodies and a great selection of lenses. And I am getting ready to buy the 1dx mk2. I have photographed documentaries for the Army, collegiate sports, weddings, senior portraits, high school sports pics, been published more times than I can count in newspapers, and in magazines. I don't baby my equipment, it takes a beating. Dings, rain, snow, heat, dirt, etc, It's just unavoidable. There is nothing I feel limited by with my current set up.
Can anyone tell me just why mirrorless is so much better? Can you tell me in simple terms why I would be head over heals in love with a mirrorless camera?

No, I can not tell you, because mirrorless in not any better! I would stick with what you have, there is absolutely no reason to fix, what is not broken! You already have the best, so I think it actually would be dumb to switch!
